Mission Swindon:Part Two STEAM
on: August 19, 2013, 10:55:48 PM
Back to proper geeking!

STEAM is the museum of the Great Western Railway,or Gods Wonderful Railway as it was also known!

I'm still uploading pictures,so there's still more to come :D

Firstly, the Assembly room, showing how the engines were assembled.

The loco is a 49xx,a 2-8-0 goods loco. If my memory serves me,this one was 4929. She was scrapped at Barry at the end of steam and lay there until '86 when she was rescued by STEAM

Caerphilly Castle is kind of the pride of the STEAM collection.Thing I loved was the inspection pit, allowing you underneath her!

Lovely, John!  :tu:  I love trains.  Even taking one to and from work every day hasn't diminished that.  Very close to here is the Whippany Railway Museum, which has several old diesels and passenger cars on display.  Supposedly in another town nearby a GG1 electric locomotive is lurking on a siding, I've not had a chance to go look for it yet.  I've been on several steam excursions as well, and managed to get a cab ride in an Alco RS-1 a few years ago!

Nice one John  :tu: Ever been to York Railway Museum? Last time I went there was a footplate talk on the Mallard from an old fireman. I asked if I could see inside the firebox and he said yes ... but I don't think he was expecting me to climb in  >:D

Last year me and a gang of lads went on the Keithley and Worth Valley Beer Festival, which is basically a steam train ride to a huge hangar full of real ale    Needless to say it was an excellent day out  :D

Bit of the old Broad Gauge

I had wanted to try and get a SAK picture somewhere, but given how many kids there were running round,I didn't think getting a knife out was a good idea. That and I have a thing about people touching exhibits in museums.

Next time I go to Whippany I'll bring my camera, same as hunting for the GG1.  the cab ride was a complete surprise.  They were doing a short excursion on the short line RR that runs through town one weekend, and I got to talking with one of the crew about old Alco's.  This RR only runs Alco engines, and has since before 1900.  I asked to look in the cab, and next thing you know I was told to stay for the ride!  :o  NJ Transit rail and the Norfolk Southern run through town as well, but you can tell those old Alco engines from the sound of their horns.  Guess the guy was a bit impressed that I could do that........  Some links to these locomotives I'm talking about.
