A bit of a puzzle...
on: May 30, 2013, 12:28:19 AM
I recently went to the victorinox warehouse sale and picked up among other things of Victorinox diplomat new in box so I open the box and according to Sakwiki it has Chrome plated scales now looking at the knife inside the box it was in a plastic bag marked..

Lund silverworks

My question is was it ever made with sterling silver scales? Or maybe it is a classic in the wrong box? How can I tell the difference?

Sterling silver scales will be marked on one side with Sterling or .925 - usually both.
The work takes on a life unplanned
and the painter finds the painting directs the hand

No the stamp with .925 or other Sterling halmark would be on the outside of the scales.

I think it is probably a real diplomate, looks like it from the picture.

Maybe Lund did the polishing on these, Lund did make some of the Sterling models for Victorinox.

Victorinox appears to have been clearing inventory of the diplomate lately as it has appeared at a few retailers at discounted prices, so unless someone made a mistake it is very likely you have the polished stainless steel Dimplomat.

I just figured the chrome plated stainless would be rather magnetic.. That's not the case here. I feel a tiny pull maybe from the liner, barely noticeable

depending on the sort of stainless, quite a lot aren't magnetic. 304 and 316 aren't for instance.

As usual, ICFT is correct. The knife is the Diplomat. I believe the packet the knife came with is labelled Lunt Stainless. With the jump in silver prices over the past several years most of the silverware producers have added stainless steel products to their offerings. By the way, Lunt has gone out of business recently as have several other silverware companies as a result of the rise in silver and the decline in "formal dining."
