Custom scales on Wenger Ranger....
on: June 05, 2013, 10:53:43 PM
Just wondering if anyone here has done any custom scales on a Wenger Ranger.

I'm thinking about doing it, currently I'm brainstorming ideas on how to make the wrap-around (where Wengers wrap around the liner, vs Vics that sit on top).

I've done several sets of custom scales on Vics, but the wrap-around design of the Wenger presents a new challenge, I have a few ideas just wondering how others have done it.

Hi Sags,

Welcome to the forum!

I have a couple of Wengers with custom handles, carbon fibre/G-10 and rosewood. Neither was done as a wrap-around, but simply flush with the liner. Both look good.

I've done it on the 85mm frame but not a 130mm Ranger size.

Here's a "How to" I did on making Wenger wrap around as you call them scales. I messed the paint job a bit but I like the scales on that one.

I hope it can help you out on the bigger frame too. :salute:

This Wenger Commander was dome with recessed or wrap around scales.

Method: Cut the recess before shaping the scales, trace around the side scales and then use Dremel and steady hand, work slowly, it's easier than putting material back on ::)

Thanks for the ideas and pictures.

I know I could do the recess out of one piece with a dremel, it's just difficult to be precise that way.  I was thinking about maybe doing each side in 2 pieces, using the scroll saw w/ fine spiral blade to cut out a perfect hole to match the liner, then adding that to a flat piece to make the recess.  That way the part that wraps around could also be a different kind of "highlight" material.

Although I usually work in wood, I was also thinking that I want to do something more colorful this time... was looking at this stuff

My worry with it is that being polyester it will be to slippery after it's polished especially when wet, or with sweaty palms.

I've used something like that,

Toffee-Chocolate Swirl...   resin

not really any more slippery than any other polished plastic.
