Here is something fancy and elegant. Canadian Tire comes out with these low run special edition tools every now and again. This time, they did a utility knife. This one is a beauty with brass handles, an interesting decorative design that is also splashed onto the nice leather sheath. I like this one a lot.

A little Leatherman information.

That looks nice. And the knife being Canadian, the ouvrir is a nice touch of French to add in there.

No, I didn't.

However, for 9 bucks...one can't go wrong with this one.

Oh, and I have a few sets...

If I lived in Canada I'd be quite happy to pay 9 bucks for such a nice looking box cutter  :tu:

I suspect workmen on an average UK building site would laugh at you for having a knife with "flowers" on it, but I rather like it. :D

Had to go and pick up mine. For whom did not notice this, they are lockbacks with studs for one hand opening.

The blade implement came with two functional ends, super sharp and can be easily exchanged, size seems to be standard (connoisseurs, feel free to comment).

Solid brass handles, decorated on both sides, with brass rivets on the handle (the blade rivets are all steel).

The steel is not marked stainless and may be not.

Smooth and easy to deploy, close with a satisfying 'snap', locks up solid, heavy and feel very consistent. The pouch feels a bit cheap but is nice and functional.

Plus they have a lifetime warrantee - can be brought back at any Canadian Tire store without receipt in case one breaks years from now.

That is correct, the actual knife appears to be standard. Actually Canadian Tire sells under their Mastercraft brand name several standard models at about the same price. That's a plus, rather than have this "LE" use some non standard parts, because replacement blades are cheap and easily available, making the knife perfectly useable. The handles are what sets it apart.

 :)

So now loaded with some extra Fat Max and Stanley Carbide blades the thing is my EDC. And it does it's cutting jobs superbly.

A bit curious being (not being familiar myself with this type of knives, never being interested in them until now) and maybe to do a random compare I also got a similar lockback utility knife from Husky, wrapped in red anodized aluminium handles, SS pocket clip and extra 1o blades with loader included, all for just ~ $8, from another local Hardware store (interesting how cheap these knives are, even if one thinks of them as more like razor blade holders). A very similar (bit not identic inner build), just with screwed on (plus) anodized aluminium handles. Looks a bit like this:

The LE one is much heavier, has better snap (3 piece backspring versus 1 piece may have to do with this) and something interesting:

Some lockback knives have the bad tendency to sink the blade in handle and have the edge rest against the backspring if you squeeze them in hand closed. This Husky utility I got does the same thing. The Mastercraft LE does not! Cool.

Anyway, sorry if I bored anyone with too much blah about my cheapie box cutter. I am happy just discovering how liberating feels to be able to cut through anything, metal included, without fear of severely damaging the blade edge.

That is one of the reasons why I love utility knives so much. Another is that they are fairly cheap and come in a remarkable wide variety of styles.

Here are a few older threads on Utility knives.

A bit of bad news. The handles are.....not.....brass. Oh, well, it was hard to believe at this price. Silver started to show up from underneath the "antique brass" patina (just at the surface, some sort of brass-like plating). I scrapped a bit to be sure and yup, silver. Not sure yet what material is it, it is heavy (about the same as brass would be) and about same as soft (give or take). Suspect is some sort of diecast. Would be nice to be nickel silver but I do not believe it. What's incredible is that the Mastercraft brand name got diluted so much, to sell this thing as a limited edition (nonentheless) brass lockback utility knife - apparently they forgot to add "-like finish" after "brass" in there - or "antique brass patina". Maybe they got owned by their manufacturing partner in China as I was, thinking it's real brass  ::)

I'll keep using mine for the heavy cut chores. Works and handles very well. But with that silver showing from the "brass" handles it kind of lost from its original appeal to me.

Oh, well :D
