Grand Prairie Knives: Like MT.O Heaven

I was interested in getting a hands-on look at a couple Maxpedition bags, most notably the Jumbo and Fatboy Versipacks. Apparently, there's only one place in the whole of the St. Louis metro area that carries them, and that's Grand Prairie Knives. It's about 10 miles from me, luckily.

Here's a link the their website.

So, I walk into the shop, and Lo and Behold... case after case of knives. Big and small, expensive and those for the budget minded. Every aisle cap was a display for a different company's flashlights (Fenix, Preon, on and on). And an area of wall about 20 feet long, floor to ceiling of Maxpedition gear. Knife sharpeners, kitchen knives, SOL first aid/survival gear. I think they had nearly a hundred different swiss army knives. AND they sold replacement toothpicks and tweezers. There was an admitted scarcity of brands of multitools, but they carried a wide range of Leatherman, the two Victorinox, a few Gerbers, and a number of SOGs. I got to play with the Gerber Crucial while I was there.

The best news (for me) is not only did they have a wide variety of Maxpedition bags, but they had the S-Type Versipacks, which are designed for lefties.

Wow. I would be really excited about that store. The prices seem fair as well. Those new orange Spydercos are looking good too.

Yeah, I fondled a bunch of the little H1 Spydercos. I still want a Ladybug Salt, but ...wow... it's a lot smaller than I imagined.

The Ladybug is tiny but very capable. I got one a while back in full serrations and VG-10 because it was a great price. I never really carry it with me, but I have gotten used to the size and actually really like how small it is. I suppose it would go good on a key chain, but I am to worried something like a key will catch the Spydy hole and deploy the knife. It is ideal for a coin/watch pocket if you do not already carry something in there. If you need more grip you can add a lanyard and hold that in the rest of your hand. Basically I love my Ladybug.  :D

I think it might have been a matter of perception, standing in a store with much larger knives all around. I have no doubt as to how useful it'd be. Come to think of it, I'm wondering now if the very slight weight might have been a contributing factor to it seeming so small.

Place sounds awesome. For me, not so much my wallet. Too bad I live on the exact opposite end of the state. Or maybe that's a good thing?
