Fake Rescue Tool for sale:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Victorinox-Swiss-Army-Pocket-Knife-StayGlow-111mm-Rescue-Tool-Survival/133205153001
(Image removed from quote.)

Kamakiri, I apologize in advance for my ignorance in these matters, but how could you tell this one is fake? I compared the pics to the photo on Sakwiki and couldn't really spot the difference(s?). What gave it away?

Can I chip in ?  ???    :tu:

ST Please don't apologise - We love questions like this and this site is all about discussing stuff and sharing our knowledge.

Very good question - But I agree with KK - This is a fake

There were  a lot of (very good) fakes around when this model first came out as it is a high value item
For this one clues are
- The toothpick and tweezer slots are too big - They 'fit' exactly on real Vics
- The serrations on the main and belt cutter blade are too pointy
- The Vic logo and 'Rescue Tool' text are unlikely to fade/wear like that (as much) on a real one
- Oh and the 'big' one - A hole in the awl - Liner lock 111mm models never had the hole !!
- Also the point on the window breaker looks too smooth!

This is a very good fake and these differences are very hard to spot - Which is a shame for ebay buyers

Another clue was the shape of the thumb hole - But that looks about right on this one
There is an article around somewhere I will dig it out.

EDIT: Here is the article from Archerwin's blog..
http://archerwinsak.blogspot.com/2014/06/review-how-to-spot-fake-victorinox.html
And it looks like the hole is wrong in this fake as per the article!
Also if you search this forum - You'll find a few articles on this topic  :tu:

Can I still say 'no'?  :tu:   ;)

...

Simon - Huntsman got you covered with the reasons. First thing that caught my eye were the serrations. But it goes downhill from there immediately.  Judging knives from crappy auction photos takes a bit of practice and painful moments in between...

I also don't think the genuine ones have that type of tang stamp.

Reported (yesterday). But the ad is still there :)

Many thanks, Huntsman et al., that is very interesting indeed!  :tu:

I did notice that the TT slots looked a bit too recessed. But the TT seemed to fit fine, so I thought nothing of it. I will pay more attention to that detail in the future. The liner lock/awl thing is obviously big. But you need to know the 111mm line - or at least the Rescue Tool - in detail to spot that. I sure didn't   :(

For educational purposes, it would be great if you experts could explain the details of an elaborate fake when you post it in this thread. I consult it every once in a while to learn more about fakes and I am sure others do too.

By the way, I just had a deeper look into the ebay seller: "knifelady80" has a good reputation and seems to deal in used Vics on a large scale. I imagine she doesn't know herself the thing is fake - maybe one of you should let her know.

It has the be said that the elongulated hole on the fake was actually correct on the early production runs before Vic switched to the round hole.

I just sent a message to the seller to inform her that it is a knock-off. I included pictures of a genuine Rescue Tool. The biggest giveaway is that the locking liner does not extend the full length so that it can lock both the blade and screwdriver.

There are already a lot of articles and posts/threads and youtube videos specifically about the Rescue Tool fakes.  I mostly wanted to post that I saw one so that nobody here would buy it unknowingly. Honestly, I almost want it just for the example as I don't have one.

I think otherwise, this thread is a great resource for learning about fake SAKs. Perhaps the best place.  Earlier this year I posted about some knives that I thought were 'obvious' fakes...I was wrong.   Another reason for me to post about it here.

Oh, I did that days before I posted it (just checked - was 10/16).  Thought I'd give her a chance to pull/cancel the auction.  I'm really surprised it wasn't at least amended...hence my post.  She does provide good enough pictures that she shouldn't have any issues with a return, which she does allow.  Perhaps she doubted that I knew what I was talking about.  :dunno:

Well it is a really good fake SAK, one of the best i've seen so far. This one could fool a lot of people, and I can't really blame them for being fooled. Only if you really invested a lot of time in SAKs you'd be able to tell it's a fake. Good chance the seller simply doesn't believe it's fake.

These are not fakes per se but the seller has made several listing errors. This is browsing manipulation and not allowed on eBay.
