I may have a significant problem
on: July 25, 2013, 10:16:09 PM
My friends,I think I have a very real problem...

Since first trying to retire my PST,I've used a number of different multitools.Waves,Fuses,PPPs,MP400 and 600s.Back at the end of last year, two new tools utterly shattered my standards and expectations.I still cannot decide which of the two is the better, whether its the SwissTool or the SwissTool Spirit. One lacks scissors, the other a ruler...but otherwise, awesome quality, great tool loads and utter dependability!

I have to admit to becoming a bit disillusioned with American MTs.I greatly fear that Leatherman have lost the plot, and while Gerber have some awesome designs, both retro and modern, they seem to miss to many times in too many ways.SOG,well...love Thier classics, like the Paratool and the PPP,but Thier more recent tools are just...wrong!

I guess I'd have been ok if it Wasnt for that damned Kiwi,Zoidberg(Damn you Zoid!) gifting me a LM Pulse.

The Pulse,in short is a perfected PST.Locking tools, great tool load, and rolled edges on the handles, making it possible to grip the tool without killing your hands!I keep finding the Pulse being able to knock the Victorinox multis from my daily carry. The only real killer for me,here in the UK,is the locking blade.Otherwise the Pulse is perfect for me.

Some months ago I got a what appears to be unique Wenger from Grumpy Barry. Its basically a non locking S557.In every respect its basically inferior to a Victorinox, but for whatever reason, this little git has become my permanent EDC SAK. I try other SAKs,but after a day or two its back to the Wenger...

I have a very strong notion to do a bladeless PST hybrid, best of both PST 1 and 2,just without a blade.I have the notion that this tool might just become a near permanent EDC!

If this happens,it will I think, rival Charlton Hestons journey in the Planet of The Apes,to return to where I started from(just without the sexy mute cave girl).

If this comes to pass(the PST ,not the Ape takeover ) it will be abandoning progress and evolution in favour of the MT equiviant to a flint axe.Somehow I find this very worrying

There is no beginning,or ending, and for this we are thankful, cos now is hard enough to understand!

John,

The oddball Wenger from The Grumpy One was a real score (you jammy little smurf), and I'm not surprised it's become permanant .... for now  :P The solution for the Swisstool/Spirit is undoubtedly a Swisstool CS Plus for the bag, and a Spirit X (or RT) for lighter carry - so you ain't finished shoping yet  ;)

I tried the Pulse in my early stages of MT research after joining here, and traded it away to Sparky, as I could not abide the locks, and after the outboard tools of the Swisstool, I found it a right royal pain in the nethers to use. If it works for you though, that's great  :tu: I can fully appreciate the lure to knifeless though, and I currently have three knifeless mods, plus a serious liking for the IDL T7 for lighter carry as a companion to a Traveller or similar.

Don't worry about the older tools being perfect for you though. AHB is in love with the Sideclip (another tool I tried and failed with), Chako is almost permamantly fixed on the Knifeless Fuse, and there's a couple of members who really love the PST II. Personally I'm a fan of the SOG Toolclip, Buck X-Tract Fin and Essential, "Spyder Guppie", MP700 and a few other of the tools that have faded from view. It's really not a problem - it just means you are reaching enlightenment .... although the fact you've settled on a PST instead of a Paladin PT-510 with PST II parts like my PPPP means you ought to change the lightbulb

.... I really wish I could find my PT-510

The Pulse is indeed the ultimate PST in my opinion, for all the reasons you gave.  It is by far and away my favourite LM ever produced and it is a damn shame LM seems to have moved away from that tool selection as it suits me down to the ground. :-\
Be excellent to each other and always know where your towel is.

The Pulse is a classic. If you like the PST...have you tried a PST II yet? Nothing wrong with the oldies. Sometimes, newer isn't always better.
A little Leatherman information.

+1, in spite of the best efforts of marketing departments everywhere to convince us otherwise.

Yeh..have two PST2s,carrying one today, the other is being test driven by another forumite as we speak. As and when I go ahead with the conversion its looking likely it'll be based on a 2

Al,as the million dollar Wenger, all I can say is

As to getting 2 more Vic multis,I believe I'm repeating myself when I say GET THEE BEHIND ME SATAN!

I know what happened to your Sideclip...I have it :D

And your really not wrong about the PT-510

I just broke out my Pulse and trying to figure out what vintage tools I have kicking around that would replace the blade. It looks like it could be PST parts with a small notch so they could lock.

How about an Awl? I mean. That could be an easy swap.

In fact, I just got some Engineer Screw Pliers that are JUST the ticket for attacking those knurled disc screws.

That's how I made my MST!

Or if you want to keep the blade just adjust the notch or locking tab, easy enough to do as well.

I always err on the side of re-convertibility. Adjusting the lock tab makes the mod permanent.

@Zoidberg: Mate,if I ever get to doing a conversion to a Pulse,it won't be to your old one.It may be a user, but in any other respect its sacrosanct!

@Satan...I mean 50ft-trad :megaslap:

@Metro: cheers mate,if the chance ever comes up,an awl would be ideal

Now Gentlemen,its done!

Just fill in the notch using loctite or uhu etc. Blade won't lock and it will be reversible.
