High rating AAA/AA NiMH batteries??
on: June 19, 2013, 04:23:27 PM
Many years ago i worked for an electronic chain in australia known as Dick Smith Electronics.
I used to sell a lot of NiMH batteries and still have quite a few that i salvaged from written off cordless phone handset etc.

What used to be pretty standard was AAA batteries ranged from the 600-750mah mark and AA where in the 1600-2000ma mark (with 2500mah being the real Expensive ones)

Today i jumped on ebay thinking maybe i should get something a little stonger than my panasonic 650mah aaa battery to squeeze more than 2.5hr runtime from my led solitaire. AAA batteries are now available in 1000, 1350,1800 and 2000mah!  :ahhh

Does anyone have experience with these sort of ratings? Anyone confirm if they have actually got superior runtime or tested the output with a  multimeter? Is fail rate high?
For $6 for 10 2000mah batteries i might be getting them anyway but was wondering if i should get a lower rating and err on the side of caution.  ???

Also has me wondering how far the AA go these days, 3000mah combo was offered with a set of aaa 1800's.

With battery ratings so high these days i just tend to by the plastic c/d cell AAA adapters for my bigger stuff (ah the days of crappy and overpriced nicad C/D cells are long in the past)

Get Eneloops. Or Duracell rechargables with white tops (rebranded Eneloops). Normal ones are rated at 1500 800 for aaa and 2000 for aa I believe (off the top of my head here but you cancheck) and have very low self discharge rates, 10-15% in 3 years. Normal rechargables will be dead in a couple of months even if you don't use them. I've been using eneloops exclusively for years now and they are the best thing around.

There are also XX versions of them with more mAh but have less recharge cycles.

EDIT: corrected AAA

AAA batteries that are marked as 2000mah are fake, they are normally sell under BTY name or something like that, apparently they only have a rating of about 500mah or less.

The highest genuine AAA batteries I've seen are 1100mah but also tend to be more expensive.

As the saying goes, and its especially true for rechargeable batteries, You pay for what you get!!!

I second the eneloops. I'm not sure if you have Costco by you, but one by me has a pack of 8 AAs and 2 AAAs with a charger for something like $20.

I knew I mixed something up. (added correct info in the post)

Here are the ratings for Eneloops.

If you buy aknown brand (e.g. panasonic, sanyo, sony,Ansmann, tronic etc.) then the capacity they advertise is reasonably accurate.
If you buy the blue/purple/yellow super capacity eBay ones, with no brand, then the claims mean nothing. I have had several and some were prety good and lasted for a long time, whilst others were really bad and died soon. What I find with the bad ones is that their life is very short and their capacity decreases after a few charges.
If you intend to charge and use the batteries immediately (like in a RC car or a flashgun) then buy normal , good, ones. If you want to charge them and use them after some time, or for a bit every day then buy LSD ones, by Duracell, Eneloops, GP, tronic etc.

Just for clarification. LSD isn't a brand. It means low self discharge.

I thought 2000mah was just too good for such a small little battery.

I know about eneloops and there cousins but given most of my batteries are used and recharge on a regular basis i'm fine with non low-self-discharge cheapies.
My main concern is how many times i can supercharge the suckers in my 1hr charger before they become tabletop scenery.

might have to buy a few of each rated size on ebay and do some testing & review for the greater cause :D

No costco in australia or brazil i'm afraid. While the average wage is much higher in australian the cost of things in the united states tends to be so much lower even if you factor in scaled incomes!

G'Day Mate,

There is a Costco in Sydney and has been for the last couple of months. I have a few friends doing their shopping there.

Cheers,

Pete

I've been using eneloops exclusively for years now and they are the best thing around.

I too use Eneloops exclusively.  I don't know if they are the best (though they could be), but I have been pleased with their performance.  I probably have 30 Eneloops now in various uses from Wii remotes to my EDC light.  The LSD is especially nice, as the batteries are ready for action when you need them.  And unlike Alkys, I have not found that they poop all over the inside of your device if you leave them in there too long.

I bought 20x AA and 20x AAA Eneloop Lites about a year ago and have replaced all the batteries in my battery operated devices throughout the house. Remotes, clocks, doorbells, vacuum cleaner (there's a remote in the handle to turn it on), ... and have been using regular ones and Duraloops for about 4 years now in flashlights, not a single leakage. :tu: No more Alkies for me. I have a small batch of Energiser Lithiums though.

I'm another eneloop fan - but the std capacity LSD ones, not the higher capacity versions.

The std ones are more durable (withstand abuse) and rated for many more cycles before they need to be replaced IIRC the latest generation 4 ones are rated for 2,000 cycles !  So unless you really need the extra capacity and are willing to sacrifice cycle life to get it almost every usage is better off with the std ones.

Of course if you want to get the best out of any NiMh battery you need a decent charger to look after them correctly.  I use a MAHA C9000 with good results.

But we do have the "Battery House", obviously that doesn't mean they'll be anywhere cheap
