How did you discover alox?
on: July 25, 2013, 12:03:08 AM
I will start...

I had had multiple SAKs throughout my life, strictly as pocket knives, not collectibles. A few years ago, after reading "Build the Perfect Survival Kit," I visited the author's website, and, while browsing knives, saw the farmer...I had never seen alox before, so I bought it...after it arrived I was hooked...

When I bought my first ALOX SAK my post count here was 3. :P Bought a Wenger SI and a Vic Bantam from a forum member. So yes, I blame MTO. :D

The SI is still my favorite ALOX model. :tu:

The first time I came across an Alox was at our airport chapel sale.  While digging through a box of hundreds of Vics, I had found a near perfect Solider.  I've been in love ever since!  :dd:

edit:

The date was 23 March 12.

The Chapel at the airport had another one day sale and I scored a few things.
  • Classic Alox
  • Pioneer
  • Pink Signature Lite
  • Grafting Knife
  • Orange Buck 425
  • Leatherman Tool Adapter

(Image removed from quote.)

(Image removed from quote.)

I got all of it for $10, which isn't too bad I don't think  :D

Haha, ya think?  Same for me as well.  This awesome place is to blame (I think Kirky's safe for once...maybe ;)).  I'm so glad I discovered it though.  Love it.  The Pioneer is awesome, and I love my Mechaneer :D

I knew of Alox from local Victorinox dealers' displays, and played with them very briefly in the past.  But not until this year, I saw all the enthusiasm of collecting and comparing it to regular SAKs here that convinced me to get a bunch.

 Such statements are supposed to be reprimanded, aren't they?

I found out about Alox in the summer of 2006 or 2007, not sure about the exact date. I was paying a visit to a friend at work. At the time a Vic dealership store was right next door. As I was about to leave I thought I had been SAKless long enough with just my Opinel No.8 so I stepped in. I immediately noticed the Alox display that they didn't have at the front window and five minutes later I had bought my very first Alox, a Harvester.

I blame the great MTO for a dozen and a half other SAKs and MTs I bought me after discovering these forums about a year and a half ago.  :D

I discovered them in the late 80's when I had an on/off love affair with a Vic Pioneer in a local outdoor retailer.  In hand, it felt heavier than my Spartan while having less tools so I returned it.  Only to buy it and return it at least once more.  At one time I had a collection of Pioneers but now I only have a few Alox Soldiers and a Classic.  I still prefer the regular scaled models.

makes me wonder, since everyone serves in Switzerland, if there is a higher percentage of collectors than in other countries

This place put me onto Alox...first it was the Farmer which I think is one of the best all round SAK's, I managed to pick up quite a few bargains from Mr Meeker then the whole limited run Alox started at first the prices were great but then Tim noticed people buying from him and putting them straight onto ebay where they sold for stupid money ::) so he put his prices up, can't blame him really and I love the work he doe's with kitty cats
I've since sold my Alox collection as I needed the money  just keeping a few users which are...
Vintage Electrician
Vintage Pioneer with 85 Soldier blade
07 Soldier
Pioneer which lives in the kitchen as the can opener
City Pioneer made for me by harryf3 (Aris) of this parish...I did have a Farmer with scissors that Aris made for me but I gave it to my nephew for his 21st birthday :)
Alox models are hard to come by in the UK now for some reason, shame really as I think they make perfect EDC knives.
There he goes. One of God's own prototypes. A high-powered mutant of some kind never even considered for mass production. Too weird to live, and too rare to die.

Last year, I purchased a Farmer.

Familiar story. These boards are largely to blame.

I guess i'd been aware of their existence for much longer. They just never really showed up on my radar before.

Now, I also have a Cadet on the way. So....

Ironically,I originally thought Alox knives were cheap sakalikes

I too blame this forum, well here and SOSAK anyway.Got a Farmer early on...never took to it,and ended up gifting it to a (knife) deprived friend.

Took seriously to the idea after TattooSteve done a custom for me(permanent part of my work EDC ).Since then ended up with a small number of Farmers and Soldiers.Still don't really rate them for work due to tool load limitations, but think Thier great for outdoors :tu:
There is no beginning,or ending, and for this we are thankful, cos now is hard enough to understand!

Probably not, its so ubiquitous that it lacks a certain, je ne sais quoi... Because of that, I think for most Swiss its a common everyday item and not a collectible. I have currently probably a dozend Vics, most of them were advertising gifts. Don't get me wrong I love my Dual Pro (it was even used to cut a wedding cake at one point) but when I find something that suits me more, I will replace it.
It wouldn't be the internet without people complaining.

Saw and bought my first alox classic in an eBay lot. First thoughts were it was some kind of economy model as it did not have the inserts like the cellidor models. It was heavily used so it did not look that great to me but once I saw some new ones I was hooked. I do not have the alox fever though.  :ahhh

Got mine from Amazon for less than £20 IIRC which I thought was reasonable.

My first 2 SAKs I bought were Alox, a red Alox Companion, and a Silver Alox Money-Clip.

Then I got a SuperTinker because it was mislabeled and in trying to identify exactly what model it was I found SOSAK.  Alox was not that popular yet, but when I bought my first two knives there was a beautiful red Alox Secretary style knife that I did not buy, and I regretted it. So after finding SOSAK I went on a mission to find out what it was and where I could get it.  In that process I discovered the big world of Alox.  Now I'm broke, and still don't have all the Alox knives... be afraid of the Alox-Pox.

To me Alox just always looked better, especially some of the deep red smooth Alox they use to make.  Maybe i was conditioned for metal because my first real knife was probably a Kershaw Chive with the then new DLC type coating.  What a beauty!

I like tools though so discovering the rest of the SAK universe has been fun.  I use to dream about Alox MiniChamps, and the dream has come true.  I use to dream about Scissors in Alox, and the dream has come true.  I use to dream about a metal housing for the Magnifier, and the dream came true.  I use to dream of Type-3 anodized SAKs and the dream came true.  So many more dream came true... what can I say... we live in a great time for Alox SAKs; Enjoy It!

Right now I'm dreaming of some paper, and my new keychain SAK that Mr. Modder is putting together.  Christmas in July (or August) I hope so... I've pretty much had Christmas every month for the last 3 years.

Alox

ps... carrying the Cellidor Sempach though right now as EDC... but have a Director and 007 Orange/Black Alox in the pockets also.

Remember: be afraid of the Pox.
