Sad day for British comedy

Not sure how well known Mel Smith was around the world, but for a lot of Brits (of a certain age) he was a comedy genius.  Very sorry to hear of his passing. :(

warning mildly bad language in this one. ;)

working with Rowan Atkinson as "Gerald". :D

Sad news indeed. Some people less familiar with British comedy, may still have seen him elsewhere ...

I didn't know who he was when I read his name, but when I saw his face I immediately remembered seeing him on tv when I was a child.

Sad news indeed, may he rest in peace .

Yes, it is sad of his passing but when I first seen this thread I thought you were gonna tell us that Benny Hill passed! :)

That's a shame, way too soon.  :(
We grew up with Not The Nine O'Clock News and Alas Smith And Jones, classic shows.
I think the last I heard from him was narrating on Orangutan Island? (an Animal Planet show)

I first saw him on Smith and Jones. I didn't get all the jokes back then (as I didn't know enough about the UK), and I'm sure I still wouldn't, but it still was some of the best comedy I know of. Saw his passing in the news today, mentioned it to my wife, and we shared that bummed out feeling when there's one less of those that have brought you laughter in the world.

For those not familiar with his material, browse around a bit on Youtube, you're in for a treat.

Very sad news.  He was a very funny man.  RIP

Although I grew up on Alas Smith and Jones too, the sneeze scene from "Morons" is probably the first thing I think of when someone ever mentions him.

I am making a special case and believing in reincarnation for today just so I can imagine that Mel Smith has been reborn as the new Prince of Cambridge, 3rd in line to the British Throne.
