Difficulty with Blade Deployment
on: March 21, 2013, 06:54:12 PM
Hi guys,

The clip point knife on my Surge is a lot harder to deploy than the serrated blade on the other side. The serrated blade swings out smooth and with little resistance, but the clip point knife seems to be "stuck" and requires much more force to push out into the deployed position.

I was wondering if any of you fine folks could help me fix this problem? Has anyone else experienced this?

Sounds like the pivot is tighter on the one side. I'd loosen it a hair and see if that makes a difference.

I am an absolute beginner with a Surge (or any Leatherman) and I had the same problem. It was easy to fix the tension with the proper Torx (I believe it is T10- beware, the Leatherman bits aren't suitable, you need a "safety" Torx with a hole in the middle). Don't turn it too much. It might get easier with use.

I have trouble with my Wave's blade, too.
You need to loosen the screw for easier blade deployment.

Is the tool New or Used? It could just need a good cleaning to clear out gunk from inside the pivot. If its new it will most likely loosen up with use. If it does not you might have to loosen the screw a tiny bit.

My brand new charge did also not open smoothly, so I generously applied graphene, now its as smooth as Lieutenant Commander Data's Face.
It wouldn't be the internet without people complaining.

air in a can and 3 in one oil.
give the pivot a shot of air to dislodge any debris and a drop or so of oil and work the blade (open and close it ) while watching tv or sitting around.  if its new it will loosen with use if that doesn't help on to loosening the torx screw a bit as others have said.

the above method worked on a used charge tti I got and I didn't have to loosen the torx.  good luck.
