Dave Canterbury on youtube
on: September 07, 2013, 06:18:43 PM
You might remember him from the show dual survival on discovery. He was the sidekick of Cody Lundin for two seasons.
Thanks to Lynn I discovered that he has a very good youtube channel called wildernessoutfitters. There are tons of videos there on bushcraft and survival gear. He posts several videos each week.
I quite like his videos, because he also takes your economy into the equation, recomending and testing both cheap and expencive gear. I especially like that he takes the time to explain why he does things a certain way, instead of just telling you what you should do.
If you have the time its well worth a look.

I've been watching these over the last few months and like his approach to doing these videos.

I too have subscribed to his channel, and despite what happened with the credential crisis, I do subscribe to his channel and genuinely like him for sharing the bushcraft/survival knowledge.

In terms of dual survival, I remembered there are quite many time he might be disagreeing with Ludin on issues/approaches, and personally, I usually tend to agree with Ludin's approach more(such as don't chase dangerous animal/insect for food, don't go out in pitch-dark to 'hunt' or check 'traps', etc).  But I am also not sure whether it was staged for TV for better drama, or Dave is naturally a risk-taker.  Anyway, I really appreciate he is doing something real at the field in his youtube channel, instead of sitting in an office being a desktop reviewer.  :tu:

Im pretty sure that most of their "conflicts" where staged to make better TV.
From reading one of Lundins books and watching Daves youtube channel, their short term survival philosophies seems pretty similar to me.

Except for the neck knife. I was just watching some of his YouTube videos on knives and he said he completely hates neck knives. One thing I remember about his partner from the show is he always had his knife hanging around his neck.

I completely agree that they most likely staged quite a few "conflicts" to make better television.

Then my kudos to Dave, for some of his attempts I will not attempt with a ten foot pole...(I vividly remember how Dave wanted honey from a bee hive/hunting a crocodile for food/playing with spiders/snake...) :pok: :D

I think the conflicts could very well been a setup or maybe at the start Discovery looked for personality/philosophy that is compatible but with subtle differences for survival approaches, the guys with military background seems to me to be a little more 'gear' minded and have a tendency to use gear/material to suit their needs(active hunting), whereas Ludin seems to more willing to work harder to adept to the environment(easy/gathering food).

On blade choice, Ludin seems to have heavy influence from kochanski(no surprise, iirc, he was his student long ago), and the guys with military background like the bigger blades.

Nonetheless, I do like dual survival a lot, and do learn a lot new ideas from them.  Btw, 98.6 degrees by Ludin is an excellent read for outdoor survival(although the presentation is a little unorthodox) and Bushcraft by Kochanski is always one of my all time favorite. :)

I've been a subscriber for a while and what is nice about his channel is that you can observe how some things change and how Dave evolves despite being a renowned instructor for a long time. Mostly guys who get to the point of having their own school and having a solid reputation don't change as much

I wonder if he knows that he actually sell neck knives in his online store?

Dave and Lundin do seem to agree upon one thing about blades, and that is that they should be made of high carbon steel, not stainless.

I really enjoyed reading 98,6 degrees : keeping your ass alive, by Lundin.

That is true.  I think a lot of square-edged spine of blade should strike up spark with a ferro rod easily, and I wonder the choice for carban steel blade is also because ease of maintenance or more so because it can be use to strike spark with a flint/rock and catch with a char-cloth?

The Ludin book has really give me a paradigm shift in terms of constructing a 'outdoor survival kit'.  I used to blur the line between outdoor survival(72 hours till rescue) vs outdoor sustainability(weeks or months), and after this book, the kit is now geared for 72+ hours till rescue.

I like Dave, and followed his channel before 'Dual Survival' came out.

As has been mentioned, his everyman's approach for getting survival gear was the thing that drew me to his channel. He also has some great stuff on making 'sling bows' which is an AWESOME piece of compact survival gear, IMO.

Grathr... I'm happy to have introduced you to his channel.

I like the look of the slingbow. Unfortunately "professional" slingshots are illegal here. So is hunting with bow and arrow. I guess I will have to settle for hunting roots and pinecones with my bow and arrows.   :D

If I remember correctly, the powerfull ones made in the US became popular in the 90s. Some idiots decided to use them as weapons to damage a lot of cars, property, and other people. some people got seriously hurt.
