Favorite/EDC Pens
on: August 25, 2013, 01:35:32 AM
With several pen-related threads appearing lately, I thought it would be interesting to find out what pens everyone is carrying.  If you have a favorite desk pen, glovebox pen, etc. that you don't exactly carry, feel free to throw that in as well.  There were a couple of older threads on this topic, but I decided to start a new one rather than necro-bump.  Bonus points for pics.

My current regular carry is a Fisher bullet in gold TiN.

Pros
- Relatively small when closed, but essentially a full-size pen when open
- Fits well in almost any pocket, including coin pockets
- Writes at any angle (I often find myself writing on papers in the vertical rather than horizontal plane)
- Practically impervious to cold weather
- Long cartridge life
- Doesn't leak
- Waterproof
- Gold TiN coating looks classy and seems to be performing up to expectations with regard to scratch and wear resistance

Cons
- Not the most comfortable pen I've ever used (this might be more of a factor if I were using it to write lengthy letters or essays, but I generally just use it for signatures, short notes, filling out forms, writing checks, etc.)
- Not the smoothest writing pen I've ever used
- No good, solid pocket clip option (I know Fisher sells clips for them, but I haven't been impressed by Fisher pocket clips)

Parker Jotter for me.  Nice enough that I take care of it, but not so expensive that I'd be heart broken if I lost it.

comfy, smooth writing, long lasting, retractable clicky for quick one handed access. 8)

Same here, for the same reasons.  :tu:

I prefer pencils over pens for a variety of reasons, so I currently carry a black, unmarked leadholder very similar to the Koh-I-Noor Toison d'Or 5900, but shorter for pocketability. Picked it up at a museum (Neue Pinakothek) in Münich. Perhaps it is the same, but different color, as the one right below the 5900 on the leadholder.com page I linked to.

Anyway, for general use, the Toison d'Or 5900 is really great. Cheap and borderline bulletproof, feels really good in the hand without gimmicks that will be worn out in a few years.

My regular carry pens are the Vic Manager and the Stabilo Write-4-all fine point permanent marker:

Compared to the "usual" Sharpie, the Stabilo writes better, is cheaper and has a usable fine point that last more than the first 5 minutes of use. It also doesn't die if you forget to put the cap back on, is more comfortable to hold... generally is better in almost every way.

Desk and car pens are usually just promotional ball point pens - they're good enough for the job and free. I did all of my university exams with free pens, and I did my A levels with a pen I picked up from the floor. Cheapskate? Maybe ;)

Parker Vector rollerball and Zebra Telescopic pen for years now. Love the Parker rollerball refills. :tu: And the Zebra Telescopic is great, pocketable pen. Unnoticeable in the pocket.

Believe it or not I have four no five, pens on me when out the door, on my keychain I have an Inka, in my maxpedition micro pocket organizer I have a fisher military pen, in my rite in the rain I have a bullet space pen, on my mini pocket note pad I carry a zebra telescope, and lastly in my wallet, I carry a homemade pen, well cartridge, I took a simple cartridge and bobby pin put them together with very small heat shrink in like 1/8" and made a grip, then took a long piece of heat shrink and made sure the pin would never come off the cartridge, comes in handy every once and a while! Figures a Swiss would carry Caran d'Ache. You do know Caran d'Ache invented the modern leadholder mechanism? :)

I'll generally have one of the following:

Rotring Freeway rollerball
Faber-Castell Aluminum rollerball
Porsche Design slim-line fountain pen

+ the Inka pen on my keychain.

I was using a Zebra telescopic but about a month ago I pulled my keys out of my jeans pocket and the tip came off and rolled in to a gutter.  Really, really unimpressed with that one.

At the minute,my EDC pens are either Zebra Expandz(I have 4 different ones ),and have now added a Fisher Bullet pen.

I done the Zebra 701/Fisher conversion the other night...I like it,but is too long to go into my Skinth, it may end up in my range bag
There is no beginning,or ending, and for this we are thankful, cos now is hard enough to understand!

Several at the moment.
Parker Jotter Gold Trim

A metal version of this BIC (4 colours).

I'll try to find the real brand/image...

I use blue pens usually, mainly Pilot G-2 gel pens, and blue Bic Cristals. I also have a blue enameled Fisher Bullet that sees regular use.

Definitely some good-looking options.

I think those Parker Jotters can also take Fisher refills.  Perhaps the best of both worlds?

For a while I was constantly worried about losing it but now I normally carry my Porsche Design P3110.

The barrel is covered in woven SS wire like a high pressure hydraulic hose. Looks and feels awesome.

It cost me $239 from memory, but it is like a pair of expensive sunglasses... because it cost more, I look after it and am more careful not to misplace it.

I carry a Zebra F-301 daily for work, though I do have a Stainless Embassy Pen that, while I do really like it, I do find it to be too heavy for normal carry. :/
