The Great (Vic and Wenger) Army knife Show-off Thread!
on: September 02, 2013, 07:21:14 AM
I wondered why this doesn't exist yet...  :think:  Blatantly copying DaveK's thread here  :whistle:

THE OBJECTIVEThe idea is to add to the thread by posting a SAK that's used by any army, that hasn't already been mentioned. Copy and paste the numbered list of tools already mentioned and add your own tool, with pictures if you can to make it more colourful.

Oh, and, of course  :worthless:
THE RULES

1. To add a tool to the list - you must own it;
2. You can only add one tool per post;
3. Factory variations of tools (including colors) count separately (e.g. Red Soldier, Silver Soldier);
4. Newer models of tools are OK As long as they are marketed as that E.g. Old Soldier is different to New Soldier, but an Alox model with scraper on the caplifter isn't different from one without scraper;
5. Discussions and suggestions from all members is cool, just don't add to or copy the list in your posts unless rules 1 to 4 are valid! (So it stays easy to follow);
I'll come add my '92 DAK when I get home from work and get my camera, until then, you go, boys and girls! :gimme:

Navy rather than army, but interesting.

Old Master Craftsman for the Dutch Navy (Koniinklijke Marine), with smooth blue alox scales.

Wait a sec, guys, this is going to be a loooooong list.  Before trying to read through a long list to post a picture, may I suggest to put Victorinox and Wenger products in two seperate lists?

I don't believe Wenger has done any official knives for any country other than Switzerland. Even semi-official knives for individual units or for base exchange systems are limited. So don't think we need two lists.

What we maybe do need to consider is some way of organizing it by country. Swiss and others? Swiss, Dutch, German and others? Alphabetically? Or maybe this is something that's needs to be put in SAKwiki when its done?

+1

I was thinking about the same thing.

Let's see more cool military issued knives! That alox Craftsman is something of excessive  :drool:

Have a question about this. The original 1890 had a black wood handle. The rare 1901 varient had brown pressed fiber. However the stamp on the handle appears to be that for the 1908 model, post-1914. Info from "Le Couteau du Soldat Suisse", by Thierry Deladoey.

The one in the photo is not that old (I wish). It's stamped 32 and has a clip point blade, see the photo below. Please feel free to correct the entry if you have the definitive correct model name (and I think SakWiki may need an update too).

I wasn't planning to give this any other order than the order of posting, actually, we can "regulate" the list a bit though:

So:

#) Country - Model -  Any other info (like, for a special part of an army)

So here's the list, then:

1) Netherlands - Master Craftsman (smooth blue alox scales) - Navy
2) Germany - 108mm GAK
3) Germany - 111mm OHO GAK
4) Ireland - 111mm OH Trekker
5) Switzerland - Wenger Model 1890
6) Switzerland - Wenger Soldat 1961 - Standard Issue
7) Switzerland - Victorinox/Elsener Soldier's Knife Model 1961 (silver scales)
8) Germany - 111mm Rucksack - Kampfschwimmer (German SEALs)

Just continue the list from here  :salute:

Question.

Is this limited to Wenger and Victorinox only? Other armies issued SAK style knives too, and the GAK for the german army was made by quite a few manufacturers other than Victorinox. (Klass, B&H, I.C.A.R, Aitor, ... )

I was actually thinking of maybe moving this to the general tool discussion forum, opening it for LM/Gerber tools used, too... So, I say, sure ;)

Of course, Swisstools count, too ;)

Was hoping this would mainly be Victorinox / Wenger military knives and tools. Thinking it might provide the basis for a 'Military' section on SAKwiki. However it doesn't seem to be generating a lot of input. So much for that idea.

I'm going to change the Wenger 1890 to Wenger 1908 on the list.

I was mainly thinking of Aitor here, as we already have them listed under other manufacturers in the wiki, and maybe the GAK variations. I'd like to keep it SAK or SAKalike too.

I was thinking about that one recently. Was there ever an official name given to it? As it should probably be a different model cause of the corkscrew/phillips swap.

Also, can anyone confirm that Singapore issues black nylon Bantams? I read it a couple of times on different forums and I got mine from Singapore too some time ago.

The regular red version of the Outrider with corkscrew has the number 56731 or 54731. Not sure what the difference is.

The standard camo version with phillips has the number 55731, and is also called Outrider. This version is apparently not currently available. So assume the Malasian version is also an Outrider.

Did some more digging on the red-handled Outback. The original version apparently didn't have the long phillips under the scissors (from both SAKwiki and Smart Knives). All of my old Victorinox catalogs show the version with the long phillips with the number '54731'. However the version in my collection also has the long phillips, but came in a box numbered '56731'. So I still don't know what the difference is between the two model numbers. And now I don't know what the number is for the early version without the long phillips.  :ahhh

Cool, so the data from that thread would confirm my info on the black nylon Vic Bantam being issued in Singapore. They are updating to a OH GAK though.
