What would this custom Alox be worth?
on: September 20, 2013, 06:04:53 PM
Made this Alox custom a while back. There may even be a thread for it somewhere...

What's it worth? Hardly been used, and has no dents or nicks. Thinking of selling... :think:

I'll give you a fiver :whistle:

Seriously,for customs,you would either pick a number at random,or sell at cost+labour. Big question is,how much is it worth to you?
There is no beginning,or ending,and for this we are thankful,cos now is hard enough to understand!

A fiver?!  :facepalm:

The labour involved is not really so important, that was more enjoyment than work. Thing is though, it's three knives in one. Climber, Pioneer and other Alox for scissor spring. Put that way it seems a bit over priced...

There in is the paradox of the modder :shrug:

I moaned at the price of the +B CyberYeoman,a very neat bit of kit,but it was pointed out that it is cheaper than buying new doaners.

Best of luck though Dex  :tu:

Depends how the scissors layer is done. Flush backspring or not? Show us a photo from the back side.

I would start by adding your costs for the donor SAK and parts. Then consider how much time did you spend on it and figure out how much you would like to ask.

Or just auction it and see how much people are willing to pay.

Good luck.

My profile photo shows the back. It's the same knife. Done flush with a Pioneer blade spring.

I would value that at around $50. The rivets look awesome as does the entire thing.  :tu:

I see modded alox models and can't figure out how yall put brass pins in and make them look factory flush without a hint of damage to the scales.

that skill is worth money alone.  :salute:

And that's why I used screws! :D  I messed up a few scales trying to rivet and gave up that method.

It's hard to assess the quality of a build from images alone. There's so much more involved.
* Peening quality
* Snap
* Scissor spring shape

So I'd say it's the value of the parts plus 1-2 hours of work max. Bonus if the mod is done with expertise but that can hardly be judged by pictures as I stated.
Say my name.

Well, it arrived yesterday and I can now confirm to you all that the quality of workmanship is just incredible - you actually wouldn't know it was a mod until you saw the scissors and then only if you knew alox don't to scissors for 93.

Dexter  has done a fantastic job peening those rivets.

Tosh
I don't claim to know it all, but what I do know is right.
