What landmark tools came out in 2007?
on: September 17, 2013, 11:20:23 PM
I've decided, albeit a little late - to get my young son a multi tool that was released the year he was born (2007). Said tool will be inscribed with his name and date of birth. It will then be put away until his 21st birthday. Not a radical idea I know - but my collection is getting somewhat large and it really needs something personal that will have meaning to my son when he eventually inherits it all - a morbid thought I know.

Any suggestions??

Well, a Vic Soldier is always nice, and nice and clearly stamped with a year :)

Besides that, what's his birthyear? probably won't make -too- much of a difference, but it can rule out some things ;)
Edit: Oh, wait, I see it   let me think  ;)

Thanks bmot

That's exactly what I was looking for - I had seen it a while ago, but for the life of me I couldn't remember where.

The good news is that I have most on the list - the bad news is deciding which to use!

Well, I suppose you'd want one out of the year itsself, too, maybe that shortens the list

then, see what would engrave nicely...

I think the AL/ALX charges have a small stainless plate that could be nice...
Wenger Rangers have a nice large blade to engrave
Skeletools can probably be engraved nicely, too, certainly if you have the old PE standard version.
And the Powerlock has a good amount of Stainless real estate, too :)

(I'm not helping, am I?  )

Then the timeline thread is wrong

LM announced that the Skeletool and Skeletool CX would be released in 2007, but due to manufacturing issues (concerns about quality, IIRC), the tools did not become available for purchase until 2008.  (I believe they are listed as 2007 release on Leatherman's timeline as well.)

I remember this because I got my CX in March 2008 at the factory store before they were available anywhere else.  :D

Then the timeline thread is wrong

Yes it is. :P But if everything was correct then we wouldn't have things to discuss or complain about. :D It was announced and should have came out in 2007, but was late, very very late. ::)

You have the updated LM timeline it this post of the same thread http://forum.multitool.or....msg694989.html#msg694989

The timeline thread and that list were created back in 2007 before the Skeles even came out and was updated during the years but no one ever corrected the Skele year. I'll let Bob correct it when he gets back, it's not nice editing other peoples posts without their permission or request, especially if they are a very esteemed and knowledgeable moderator here. :D

edit: Breezy12 beat me to it. :D

I got mine in November 2008 I think.

I'd add a +1 to going for a Soldier. I'd give my remaining dangly bit for a Wenger 72!
There is no beginning,or ending, and for this we are thankful, cos now is hard enough to understand!

get him whatever you like, and then have the blade engraved. That would be more personal.

+2.  It is still easy to find, a great knife, and fairly people friendly.  Since you're in the UK, it may help that it is still a legal carry too.

Many thanks for everyone's input. :tu:

Decisions, decisions....

From the list that bmot gave, I'm actually erring towards the Powerlock 2.0.

A) Nice big areas for engraving - His full name, full date of birth and maybe add from me??
B) A very useful tool, especially with those powerful pliers.
C) May get optional extra tools (all of 'em  :D) he can then change the tool layout to his needs.

What do you think??

And, er.......which one?? B/O or Stainless?
I don't claim to know it all, but what I do know is right.

Excellent choice! I would go with the stainless, and also include some spare and extra implements (individual tools sold separately) for him to add and customize later.  :tu:

Or BO.... They do a very nice black if that is your preference. Just make sure to specify black on your extra tools.  :D

I'd choose black, I think. Might give you a nice contrast, SS engraving on the BO tool. Not sure if it works that way, but well.

That never even crossed my mind

S/S it is then. My mind is now racing with this. Anyone got the list of all extra tools available?

In my minds eye I see a nice wooden box, with the Powerlock in, pouch too. Then all the extra tools AND the tool required to change them!

What do you think  :tu:
