Gerber Diesel?

We don't hear much about folks and their Diesels, so I thought I'd find out from anyone who has owned one what they think of it.

Isn't the Diesel the same as the MP600?

Same basic idea, but actually not any shared components between the two.

I used to be a big fan of the Diesel but found their 2d Phillips driver doesn't work very well. Other than that it's a nice multitool. There's just no beating the MP600, IMHO...

I drool over it every time I go to a certain fishing shop but just when I was going to buy it I figured out there was an MTO MP600

I sold mine too, along with a bunch of other multitools. Nowadays I have a REBAR and that gets the job done pretty well  :salute:

Nah, I'm with Mike - although I do like my Gerbers too   ;) On the whole I prefer (and use WAY more often) Gerber over Leatherman  :D I'm very interested to hear what the Diesel user say too  :)

I got a Diesel when they first came out, and promptly returned it.

My example was extremely stiff. It was quite difficult to flick out the plier head, and all the inboard tools were impossible to deploy.

Also, I was used to the MP400 and 600, the Diesel just didn't feel as well made.

 My old multiplier was terrific.

My Pro Scout was terrific.

Aside from pinching anyway.

So I got a Diesel. Phillips stripped all the fins off on the very first use. Blade tip snapped off on first use (cutting a thin plastic cable tie). And the blade is just awful to begin with. It is bulkier than it needs to be. The scissor spring tends to slip out of place.

I'd skip it and try to find a Pro Scout with the old blade design. Or a 400-600 without the silly new blades.

Or.. Skip Gerber all together. Probably the best option.

The Gerber Diesel has always been one of my most used tools...and one of Gerber's best. I dumped my Leatherman wave into the retirement drawer when I got my BO Diesel.

I picked up a used one a couple of days ago, it's now residing in the same drawer as the mp400, mp600 and the two Octanes I have. IMO its just another mp600 variant. No way it would ever replace a wave or spirit for my edc tool.

:multi: I can't believe the Diesel doesn't get more love. I work in industrial maintenance and have used mine pretty much daily for two years. It's still 100% minus a few scuffs here and there. Here's a pic during a little Diesel down time

Thanks for looking   :multi:

Well, yes of course.

First impresson was that it looked and felt bigger than my MP 600 - which is not true, as a comparison showed.

I like the marked chassis as I still can`t remember on which tool is on what side.
I like the bigger scissors (compared to teh MP 600 ones)
I like teh longer blade but
I dislike the shape
I dislike the 2D Phillips - could be avoided by leaving out that lanyard hole "tool"
I like the MP 600 style can opener (vic style) better than the Diesels on e (Wenger style) , but that is purely personal taste
I don´t care for a saw on my MT, as my work rarely requires one, but it looks to be halfwy decent.
I would rather have a Bluntnose, yet again, this is personalö preference.

I don´t think it is a wise move (technically) to add more parts to the plier head - the MP 600 works just fine the way it is. I guess taht was a mercantile decision as it looks like they are using slightly altered heads from butterfly opening tools.

The new locktabs and central rivet and screw heads are pretty, but i don´t care if they are pretty. Only advantage I can see is that you can open teh Pivots with Torx now.

That´s about all I can say without playing with both and having used the Diesel.

Mine has landed finally, so I decided to have a bit of a play destroying and old computer mouse in my lunch break >:D

Phillips driver was too chunky for the screw underneath, but the mini driver handled it fine. Knife, wire cutters and scissors all cut the cable cleanly and easily. Pliers were fine enough to start pulling resistors off, and the wire cutters also cut the spindle off the finger wheel, and cropped a torsion spring. The saw handled the plastic well, and the file worked well on the USB plug after I'd splayed it with a driver and mangled it with pliers.

The drivers were also tested on door furniture (including the 2.5D Phillips), and did the job just fine. The can opener performed moderately well as an improvised awl on both wood and plastic, though I wasn't using much force to be fair. No ergonomics issues, and whilst some folks don't like "plasticky bits" it does help keep the weight down, and this is not an overly heavy tool.

I was considering making this knifeless, but I'm of the opinion the torx in the pivots would strip instantly. This is based on nothing more than suspecting a malleable material on the heads due to the patterning and finish on the pressed surfaces. Almost a slightly galled finish. I think this would be better left as it is ... maybe .... for now

Initial Impressions: Not bad at all, but nothing particularly "special" about it either.

Value wise, I'd put it somewhere between a LM Fuse and a LM Blast. More function than the Fuse, but I'd rank a Blast as a better tool in everything except the scissors and having OHO pliers ... although the file really isn't bad on this Diesel either

I'm still in two minds over the Diesel.  On one hand it has a lot of the tools I need/want, on the other it's not doing anything that one of my other MTs doesn't do already.

Cheers for all the thoughts folks, any and all experiences are still most welcome.

Wait a moment....   Thomas has one, and now Al has one.  According to Gerber subforum rules, I'm required to get one too, aren't I?   I guess I'll have to take care of that in a week or so......
