Splitting hair
on: May 10, 2008, 07:39:17 AM
Saw a video of a guy splitting hair with a fallkniven u2 on another forum, and I just had to try it.

The blue line is the line on standard notebook paper. The macro shot on my 6 years old digital camera is not bad eh? Funny thing too that I used my fenix p3d to provide the lighting, desk lamp is not nearly enough.

You did that with a U2? Nice. More info please, was this the stock edge or did you sharpen it further? Hair from where?

I haven't ever gotten any of my knives to that level. I prefer a toothy edge (translation: I'm not good enough at polishing the edge yet.  ;)).

No the other guy did it with u2, I used my spyderco centofante 3. It was reprofiled to 30° (factory was a bit more than that) and sharpened on spyderco sharpmaker and 1500 grit sandpaper. Hair is from my head.

Thats really cool  :D The sharpmaker is a great sharpener and allows you to get hair shaving sharpness quite easily . I've never got to hair splitting though  :o I would imagine its not a very practical edge as it wouldnt stay sharp for long .

VG10 actualy hold 30° quite well. But I do sharpening my SAK etc at 40°. My personal rule is that anything above 154cm is done at 30 while anything below is 40.

To show you don't need an expensive knife to do it, here's one done with my $12 opinel #8 carbon steel. It's not even freshly sharpened.

If anyone's knife can't do it I suspect it's because you need to use finer grit stone for final sharpening, at least 1000 grit, preferably 1500.
