How to fix Skeletool's wire cutter?
on: August 04, 2008, 09:05:17 AM
Used my Skeletool CX to cut a spring that was too hard for the wire cutter. Now the metal on my CX's wirecutter is slightly dented. It wouldn't be a problem if the issue was merely cosmetic, but it has made the pliers hard to close. To completely close or open the plier head, I have to exert more force than usual. This is annoying when trying to hold stuff with the pliers as I usually have to try a few times to get the right grip for delicate operations.

I'd imagine that wearing down the wire cutter portion a little would fix this, but I don't have any tools to do this. Any advice on how I can fix this problem without a workshop?

I have encountered something close to that with my charge, cut something too hard with the wire cutter. It deformed it a little feel a little grinding when I open or close the pliers. What I did is buy a little file used for sharpning saw blades, filed down the deformity works good now.

Thanks for the tip.

Would you know if ceremic knife sharpeners will do the job? I'm too lazy to go out and buy something to get this done, and am now thinking if sharpening rods will be able to wear down the metal on the wire cutters. These rods are significantly harder than most metals right?

A ceremic knife sharpener should do it better than file, and leave it looking nice and polished :)
Give in, buy several Farmer's!!!!!!

I filed the cutter of my skeletool to give it a more defined edge with sharpmaker ceramic stone, now it can cut the braided wire on fish line leader every time. The metal on cutter is quite soft and easily removed, at least compare with my knives.

woot, thanks for all the pointers. Because I'm so insecure, I wouldn't be able to bring myself to try the ceremic rods till you guys have OK-ed it :P

Will try it out tonight, didn't get a chance yesterday.

Works!! Only worry now is that the part I filed off is shiny, looks like it will be more prone to rust. I've already got quite a few rust spots on my CX. Living in a place with constant over-90% humidity sucks.

Shiney should make it less rust prone compare to rest of the surface, since water doesn't get trapped.

The only truly rustproof steel is H1 which is a cutlery steel, so duno how will it do in pliers. Besides it's really expensive compare to 420hc used by leatherman.

The steel they use in Swiss Army knives and Swisstools seems to be pretty rustproof.

Heh, if you have the patience, but I can tell you polish something like that is going to be a pain.
