Cork Screw?
on: October 09, 2013, 02:10:36 AM
The only thing I have ever used it for was to open a bottle of wine with. I do use the phillips head screw driver and the saw a lot in the woods. The saw is perfect for cutting walking sticks and cut limbs out of the way when hunting. That is why I am thinking about a Fieldmaster. What do you all used the cork screw for? Sorry, this has probably been answered before.

i use the corkscrew to house the mini driver and to help with knots.  it makes a great pick and pull tool when my fat finger wont do.

The only use I have for the corkscrew, that I noticed, that is not in on the linked list was to screw it into a loose board and then hold it in place in the upper part of a barn while standing on hale bales, so that it could be nailed or screwed back into place. IIRC what my Dad then did was to drive nails in at an angle from the adjoining boards. It sure beat climbing way up there from the outside, which considering the location and height, would have been very difficult.

I find that whatever you can do with a corkscrew there is already a better tool for the job.

I have both a fieldmaster and a huntsman. I feel that if you have another multitool with a phillips driver on you usually then the huntsman is a better choice. However if you will not have a phillips driver around I think the fieldmaster is the way to go.

What about open wine bottles :D :pok:

I cannot agree. At least if we only consider the tools included in SAKs... The corkscrew comes handy to open wine bottles, but also to some others small tasks. I used to look for SAKs without it like a super tinker, but now I tend to choose one with corkscrew and inline Philips (the CT attachment is cool also).

How about if you considered multitools?

Corkscrews are available with Swisstool, Swisstool Spirit, Leatherman Flair, Juice CS4, Juice XE6, Juice Pro, a Gerber MP400 variation, a Gerber Crucial variation ... ;) :D :D

I meant what if the tools on MTs are better for those uses than a corkscrew?

If you have those at the time then use them. But if you only have a sak and the best tool at the time is a ccork screw, then use it. The best part about multi and sak is that every tool can be used for something it was never meant to do. Like using the scissors on a LM Wave for an awl. Or using a canopener on a Surge for a scratch awl or as a key for a paper towel dispenser.

The main reported problem with the Philips that replaces the Corkscrew in the fieldmaster is that it can break easily, according to a test performed by one of the Moderators here (Whippy or J-sews I think..?)  Enci will probably find it soon  :D

I have used them, but never really pushed them too hard, so as to break. If you need a proper philips screwdriver then the one on e..g the Explorer is more robust....and the cybertool has screwdriver bits too..

The corkscrew, apart from opening wine bottles, can house the mini screwdriver, so you get two tools instead of one.

Sorry for the delay.  :P  I just came home from work. :D

As per request, here's the thread by Mr. Whippy on the breaking phillips pin:
