Hello from Norway
on: August 09, 2013, 05:27:38 AM
Greetings!
I've been lurking here for a while now and I have to say; what a great forum!
This is my first post so here's a short introduction:
I'm a Norwegian student aiming for a biology education.
I like to go hiking, scuba diving and to study nature. I'm also a stage magician.
Because of this, finding the ultimate multitool has turned out to be quite a challenge

Add a tiny apartment and no access to metal working tools to the equation, modding my own MT is not possible for me  :(
Top off with the fact that it is illegal to carry any sort of knife in public in Norway, the ultimate tool has to be bladeless.

But hey, challenges are fun!  :D

I'm looking forward to getting to know the community and to learn more about the creative and extremely addictive world of multitools!

Best wishes!
Sindre

Welcome!

Eller kanksje jeg burde si velkommen??

As far as I know it is not illegal t carry a knife in norway. The law says that you have to have a honorable reason to carry one.  A multitool with a small blade should not be a problem as long as you are not acting threatening, doing something illegal or beeing intoxicated.
A Gerber Dime or LM style CS  should be no problem at all to EDC, even in Oslo, and if you need bigger tools than that, then you have a honorable reason to carry one  ;)

Hiya Sindre, welcome to the world outside of the closet :waving:

Have you thought about a bladeless Multitool?  A number of us in the UK have de-bladed Leatherman,Gerber and SOG tools.Modding the requires pliers, sockets or hex/torx tools?

So are you guys saying carrying a SAK is basically illegal in Norway?
There is no beginning,or ending, and for this we are thankful, cos now is hard enough to understand!

Yes, no, sort of, not really, absolutely. All of those answers are correct.

In general, carrying a knife (any knife) in a public place is illegal, unless you have a respectable/honorable/good reason (don't know what the proper English term is, really). Now, anything from wearing a traditional Norwegian costume (which of course includes a fixed blade) or being on your way to a hike in the mountains is deemed as a good reason. On the other hand, it is always a question of judgement from the officer in question. Police officers have said semi-publicly that they really don't care about people's SAKs as well. The law is designed to give police officers extra leverage over "unwanted elements".

It's a pretty horrible law that has been used repeatedly to harass people. An old guy who had worn a knife all his life, way before this smurf law was created, was reported to the police just to harass him, for instance (the case went to court, and the old guy won, fortunately) . Another case was a guy arrested for having a knife to cut his apple when eating lunch in the park, he won his court case as well. It is also worth mentioning the penalties is typically a fine of around 6000 NOK or thereabouts, so a court case will quickly become more expensive. On the other hand, there is nothing in the law about repeat offences or stuff like that. So, carrying a knife isn't "dangerous" as long as you have a good and steady income. ;)

Now all that is said, I think SAK and MT users in Norway should always carry one, to be good examples and don't let the people grow accustomed to knives being illegal and "dangerous". As the law is about judgement, we should push for a SAK being "obviously respectable".

This has to be the best possible description of the situation, as well as a very good point.

I also think it depends on the individual officer. I don't have a criminal record, nor do i look like a criminal. But I've still been stopped and questioned (and embarrased) by the police in the middle of a shopping centre for beeing at the wrong place at the wrong time. I was shopping with my girlfriend and the police realized that it was a misunderstanding. However they were still rude and did not explain why they stopped me once they left. It was a very uncomfortable experience. My fear is that it is actually possible to be stopped without having done anything wrong nor acted suspiciously. And if a SAK is found during one of these "random controls" it depends on the officer whether or not you are free to go or given a fine.

However they did not search me, nor ask for any ID or evidence of my answers to their questions. So I think there is a point in not beeing criminal or suspicious looking.

But they could not possibly react to a minichamp on a keychain?
I just ordered one yesterday and can't wait :D It will replace my leatherman style wich is great but does not have a pen, scale, bottle opener or different screwdrivers...  :P

An explorer would have been ideal but i guess it sucks more to be stopped with those "deadly weaponized blades" than the cute little ones on the minichamp :p

One day I'd love to mod a 91mm sak to make it bladeless :)

Hello and welcome Sid.

I'd like to suggest that you check out the sog tool forum

they are very easy to mod with tools that you may already have.

I made myself a bladeless power pliers. It was very easy and parts are available for sale from sog or can be found here on the bst

Don't solicit legal advice on the internet, everybody judges everybody based on appearances and you're gonna love your minichamp are three statements I all believe are true.  :tu:

I usually carry a 93mm alox when I leave the house. When I go to work I also bring a folding knife. When Im going to Oslo to shop or visit friends I usually carry a 85mm SAK or a LM micra or a Dime.

Velkommen, velkommen :D

Knife laws in Norway are indeed weird, kinda. But I live in the northernmost part of our country, where owning a knife that measures atleast 6 inches, the blade that is, is almost mandatory :p
I'll often carry a MT of some sort "hidden", as in having it in my pocket with just the pocketclip showing or in my jacket. And if I go hiking or to our cabin I'll carry a fixed blade on my belt, but I'll leave the knife itself in the car if I go into a shop or something, just to be sure. I'll leave my MT in my pocket though, as they won't be (as) visible. Make that MTs actually  :D
