I was wondering if we buy something from new,and quickly move onto something else new,or whether we find something and really stick with it

I think it depends where we are in the MT progression:

Stage 1 - Only own perhaps 1-2 MTs, all users.  Changes are rare or non-existent.  Some people skip this stage and move directly to stage 2.

Stage 2 - Eyes are opened to the wider world of MTs, and interest is piqued.  MT acquisition rate and user change frequency peak as various options and combinations are tried.

Stage 3 - Most viable options have been tested and needs, likes, and dislikes become apparent.  MT acquisition rate and user change frequency drop off as favorite tools and combinations emerge.

Stage 4 - User change frequency is low, and generally prompted by external factors, e.g. new product offerings, job change, relocation/legal changes, etc.  MT acquisition in this stage may begin to focus more on collectors than users.

I went straight to stage 2 in the beginning :D  I think I'm now somewhere between stages 3-4

I'm at Stage Three, and have no intention of going further  :D I'll still get ones to try every now and again, but only if they fall within the scope of what I know works for me, or if it's something completely unknown.

I still tend to swap tools about that I'm carrying quite a bit. Partially this is simply because I can due to options available  :P but partly due to the fact I'm a bugger for putting stuff down somewhere, then finding it's easier to grab another from the drawer  ::) Every so often I have to go rummaging through bags and jackets and desks etc to round up everything and put it back where it should be  :-[ :D :D

Regular pocket carry for me includes Spirit X, Octane, Balance, MP700, modified MP400, modified Kick plus there's occasional carry of other stuff if I feel like it, or circumstances dictate something different ... and that's just some of the MTs. Then there's 3 or 4 regularly carried clipped OHO knives and 5 or 6 more traditional slippies if I'm in the mood .... then there's SAKs (about a dozen or so get fairly regular carry) ..... then there's the mini pliers tools (Dime, T5, T7, Mini Bucktool, Micro-tech, Bear Mini) to accompany a SAK when full size isn't practical .... then there's pre-assembled combos .... then there's bag carry if applicable .... ::)

Most of these have only been with me since joining up here and being battered by temptation, fuelled by vicious enablers  :P but spending has slowed right down now. I have what I need and it works. I have surplus/alternatives that also work. I've got rid of most of the stuff that doesn't suit me, and figured that there's a lot of other tools that aren't worth me getting as they'll not suit me either. Things get a lot simpler after a while  :D :D

I've had the Maglite since 1996. The carbon steel Opinel #8 I got in 2001. Both have served me very well. :salute:

My oldest user is a Victorinox Champion which I got at the age of 5. It is now 30 years old and still going strong. I only swapped the scales to Plus scales once and I replaced the spring of the scissors. Great knife!  :tool:  :)

I have my dads Imperial Boy Scouts knife from the early 60's. Its home is my tackle bag so it gets used quite often.

My 95% of the time EDC is actually pretty new, Gerber Balance and Kershaw Cryo that are both less than two years old. I have an SAK I bought sometime around '04 or '05 that I carry occasionally and which lives on my desk most of the time, so it sees some use, but not all that much. (Incidentally that SAK is interesting because I completely forgot it existed for like seven or eight years, and only recently found it in an old box full of stuff that had come out of an old car of mine years ago.)

I'm pretty much at Stage 4, as my MT purchases are pretty much just out of being an "enthusiast" and I don't see changing away from the Balance unless something better hits the market. The long screwdrivers are just so useful to me that it's hard to use anything else. I'd love it if they'd do a premium version with a better knife blade and the like, though.

I still use my Swisschamp which I got brand new in 1989 :)

The longest serving MT I have still in rotation is a Micra from around ten years ago... never thought it would be replaced by anything!
