I voted for the explorer.  It has all the tools that I use most frequently while still being just about pocketable for me.  In truth though I would really like to get my hands on a scientist and that would be the model I would make if I ever get into this modding lark.  :sak:

I'm thinking about buying a swisscard lite just for the magnifying glass, for those times when I'm carrying a different SAK.  I use the magnifying glass all the time and I couldn't do without it now.  It's really handy for reading tiny writing like the embossed expiry dates on drug packets, and I also use it to check the edge when I'm sharpening knife blades.

That is an application I had not thought of!  :tu:

Deluxe Tinker.

the Huntsman is a close second, but pliers are more useful to me than a saw.

or maybe one of these?

I have one and use it all the time. At around 2 ounces, it's not light, but it's made of metal/glass and pretty durable. Put a little dab of loktite on the screws and you'll be good to go.

I picked the...whaddayacallit...that thingy. You know...starts with an...H? I think it's an H.

Anyway, it took me, like, 30 days to choose.

Also, the 'fresnel lens' has some fans around here, might be good to look into those, too ;) Usually fits in a wallet.

No prizes for guessing my vote.
But really surprised by the results.
Would not have expdected the Explorer to be so far ahead and thought that the Phillips brigade would push the Tinker higher!!

PS. Yes and what about the Wengers?? You are all too Viccy biased!!
Loving my Evogrip 18 at the moment!!

 :ahhh
I repeat,  :ahhh  :D

My inability to answer this question (torn between the Huntman, the Mountaineer and the Deluxe Climber) lead me to buying a Vic Ranger (main user at home) and a Handyman (my bag EDC).

Since I had to vote for one, I went with the Huntsman. The metal file on the Mountaineer offers much greater versatility, I know. I find that both these SAKs have a perfect size for me to handle comfortably. Still, it had to be the Huntsman for me, don't ask me why.

Even if it weren't discontinued, I think I'd pass on the D.Climber -too thick and limited uses of those pliers for me.
I'm a little surprised to see this current lifting the Explorer so high.  :tool:

I voted for other

From the SAKWiki list, I would probably choose the Swiss Bianco CyberYeoman but that's not stock. The two tools I need the most are PH0/1 driver (and not as back layer tool) and metal file. None of the 4 layer tools combines the two.
It wouldn't be the internet without people complaining.

This thread is a bit older, so when I voted for Voyager Lite I actually meant Traveller Lite. Since we got us a dog and I need to go out with him at night, often in a hurry, I really started appreciating the Lite module. I now therefore carry either the CT Lite, the Huntsman Lite or the Traveller Lite in my trousers pocket. Given that our puppy has a tendency of going for my wrissmurfch, I have started to leave it off and use the Traveller's watch instead.

Mine was the fieldmaster, but since I really like the alox world and it has grown since this was originally posted my edc knife is the FarmerX which is four layers, and ever since I got it for Xmas I haven’t carried anything else! Even had a special pancake sheath made for it, tilted and even holds the steel!

I totally get the Explorer now - In fact it's in my pocket as I write this ........ and has been EDC for a few months.
The inline Phillips is great.
And the mag glass is so useful - as the years go by - and eyesight deteriorates

PS. I bought my Explorer on my way to the UK MT.o camping meet 2018 - So it has added significance for me!!
.... And for a bush walk/camping trip, or in the garden - I would probably pop a Wenger Ranger in my pocket or on my belt for the saw.

Sir Huntsman, thou art a noble opportunist! Not only did you forsake the SAK whose name you took, but also the Compact you used to praise. Is it safe to say the days of the Explorer in your pocket are also numbered?

 :D

Oddly I never quite got the Explorer.  I have one, I certainly don't hate it, but I never felt the love.  Each to their own I guess.  ;)

Huntsman is still my top four layer with the Grand Prix a very close second.
Be excellent to each other and always know where your towel is.

Just voted Mountaineer, while Explorer is a very close second to me.

I would say Explorer covers 95% of what I really need and use, but that 5% of time when I need a metal saw/file, I really do need it bad.  So Mountaineer for me.

I voted Other.  I would have said Deluxe Tinker years ago but I realized a saw would be more helpful day to day and in an outdoor situation.  I agree with the MadPlumbarian that the Farmer X would be my new choice over the Huntsman mainly because if I carry a 4 layer SAK it is going to be for the Outdoors primarily and I want the added durability.  If I need the scale tools I will carry a Classic SD as well.

I voted Deluxe Tinker, because it's the only one on the list that I actually own.  I have to admit I don't use it much though.  Those pliers add a lot of  size and weight to the Tinker and I just don't use them much. I bought it to compliment my SwissTool and make up for the large blunt plier head, but I find that I don't carry the DT or the ST much, in favor of smaller, lighter tools.  I keep the DT on my dresser and those small pliers come in mighty handy for making repairs to kids toys and jewelry.

I sure see the attraction of the Explorer, and I'd like to try one someday, but I always have a plier-based MT on me.  They all have a good Phillips, so an inline Phillips isn't a big deal for me on a SAK.  I actually like the back spring Phillips. Mostly because I don't like the corkscrew, even with the mini driver.
