Another type of gerber breakage
on: May 17, 2008, 03:51:40 AM
My dad has had his mp600 blunt nose for about 10 years now and it broke on him today. He was turning a bolt or something and one of the pivot rivets on the handle popped out. I told him to send it in, but I'm thinking aobut finding him a better tool. The problem is that he wants a blunt nose plier that can compare to the gerber and I'm drawing a blank on anything similar. The only two I can think of that come close are the swisstool which wasn't quite to his liking and the hard to find swissgrip. Is there any other tool I'm forgetting?

The old SOG PowerPliers came in a blunt nose variation. They are a damn good tool if you can find one.

I would say get a SwissTool. It is a far superior tool then any tool in the Gerber line. Plus, the rust resistance is also a big plus. Wait, did I just recommend a SwissTool? :D

the super bearjaws huge blunt nose pliers. I would look at that befor making a choice. the swiss tool is a good pick also but is more of a cross between blunt and needle.

While I appreciate you Dad's not being over fond of the Swisstool/Spirit it really is the best tool for most job's and is well nigh unbreakable to boot :), he might not appreciate it's strengths at first, but with a little use, I'm sure he'll love it :)

You got a model number for that blunt nose variation?
I kind of like that one. :)

Yep, its a F65 PowerPlier. They don't make 'em anymore, but they show up on eBay regularly.

There's some more pictures in this thread here: http://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,804.0.html

OK, thanks for the number.

Thought I found one first, but look at this one on ebay.

It does not look like the needle nose like the one in your photo, yet the inside grip part of the pliers is different then the blunt on in your photo.

The durability of the swisstool is the main reason I was going to recommend hime one. He might be more receptive to the swisstool than I think since I have'nt had much of a chance to show him mine. The only thing I was concerned about he swisstool is that the pliers don't open as much and the handles open much wider than the gerber. That's one thing I have to say that gerber has over most other multitools is that with the handles being parallel when the jaws are shut means that it can grip fairly large items without having the handles far apart, something most other tools can't do. Of course since the gerber can't seem to handle large and tough jobs might make that a moot point.

Best to steer clear of that auction. :( The tool pictured is indeed a PowerPlier (with a different plier head than mine, model S38) But the model number mentioned is in the auction is S45, which is a much smaller Pocket PowerPlier, which comes with pointy needlenose jaws.

Who knows which one the seller really has? :P

Maybe leaving your Swisstool with him for a week will give him the chance to see how he get's on without you being out of pocket if he doesn't like it :)
