Looking for Height Power in a Small Package
on: December 07, 2013, 10:12:07 PM
So I'm looking for a powerful flashlight in a small package.
I have/had:
Fenix E15:
+ Small
+ Design
- Don't like to unscrew the flashlight to turn it off.
- Not so bright

Olight S10L2: The one thing I miss in this package is the exposed button.
+ Clip faces backwards so it can be clipped to a baseball cap
+ Very bright
- Exposed button

So I did look at some others in the same "category". Would appreciate if anyone has some input on any of those (or more suggestions).
LED Lenser F1
EagleTac D25C Clicky (Clip faces the wrong way)
Sunwayman S10R (Love the clip, hate the design)
Sunwayman M10R

It wouldn't be the internet without people complaining.

I EDC a ZebraLight SC52.  It's listed at 280 lumens on 1 AA battery.  I run Energizer Lithiums in it.  It works for me with lots of brightness when I need it and an easy step down when I don't.

I liked the F1 well enough when I had a look at it, though it lacked a proper low mode IIRC.  50ft-Trad might be better able to chime in with a little more info.

I LOVE my D25A clicky, the most versatile EDC torch I own.  I can only hope that the C version would be just as good.

I looked at that one and think its an excellent choice, I'm not done evaluating though. Kinda like how the SC80's work too bad they are discontinued.

From your original choices, I'd choose the Eagletac D25.

But to add to your choices,  look into the Zebralight SC52.

I'm another Zebralight SC52 fan.  My preference is to run it on (AA) Sanyo Eneloops for best results (you don't really get much useful extra light from li-ion 14500 batteries).

Some people have trouble with the user interface, but I like it (and so do all the people who I have given them to).

Later Zebralights have solved the "too soft" switch issue that sometimes led to accidentally turning the light on when pocket carried.

Thanks guys for your input. I'm still evaluating though the more I read and think about, the more I lean towards an AAA battery.

While AAA lights are usually smaller and lighter, the ones with high output tend to need a 3.7V li-ion battery and get hot quickly (and drain batteries) when run on Hi settings.

I've become a big fan of compact AA lights.  I really like my ThruNite T10, but the ThruNite Saber 1A is that bit brighter: http://www.candlepowerforums.com/vb/showthread.php?353888-Review-ThruNite-Saber-1A

Thanks for that. Does the ThruNite work like
-The Fenix E15, you screw it appart to turn it off (don't like that)
or like
-Maglite Solitair, you screw it thight to turn it off (I'm okay with that)

Sorry, you screw it apart to turn off.  I actually cannot think of another manufacturer who does it like Maglite.

 but this means the ThruNite is out (with the exception of the "Archer 1A").
I have very mild OCD that acts up at the oddest moments and this is one of them. It annoyed me to no ends when I got the E15, worst part the battery moves around when its turned off :ahhh.

Well, at least I know now one thing more to look out, when buying a flashlight.

That's a shame, but I do understand.  Looks like you are limited to clicky switches and maglites then.

I've had a play with 50ft-Trad's Sunwayman V10R and I have to say I really liked it.  Seemed very well built and I really liked the silky smooth adjustment ring.

I was looking at the V11R because it has the AA-Extender. I still have lots of "research" to do, especially since I have shifted my focus from CR123 to AA.

With my twist switch lights, I always just keep turning no more and no less than half a rotation after the light goes out.  This seems to be the sweet spot where the lights don't get activated accidentally, but retain their water resistance, aren't in danger of coming apart, and don't generally suffer from battery rattle.  I'm afraid I don't have a E15 to check, but this definitely the case with my LD01.
