Going to make stayglow plus scales
on: June 04, 2013, 12:20:03 AM
I have a pair of unused stayglow scales that I'm going to put on a knife. Before I put them on though, I'm going to make them into plus scales. First of all has anyone ever done this? I know rotokid has and I think some people have made nylon plus scales? I also know I might have to reshape the gray plastic on the end of the pen. Does anyone know if since the scales are slightly transparent if they will be discolored where the pen is? And finally, does anyone have any tips on doing this? I was thinking a very sharp knife and a lot of patience, but is there a better way?

Unfortunately I am of no help to you in this endeavor ...but I will say you are a brave man for trying this.  I probably wouldn't dare try to carve a slot into the scales as I would more than likely mess it up, but if they were just a spare set I had kicking around, I would possibly try if I really wanted the pen slot.  I'm curious about the stayglow scales though.  Do they actually really glow, or are they just very brightly colored?  Good luck and I hope someone more knowledgeable comes along :salute:

They glow quite brightly but I mostly like them for the color. Yes I also feel the chance of messing up is likely, but someone has to do this!

Well that's cool.  I wouldn't mind them myself, but they might be a little "loud" for my liking here at work.  That's right, someone's got to be the brave one here ;)  Good luck :salute:

I believe the plus scales are just a bit thicker than the regular scales, so you have to be very careful not to break through. As far as what the slot will look like, I'm thinking it'll just look like the TnT slots, but again I'm not sure.

I think your best bet to make the slot is going to be with a mill and a woodruff keyseat cutter. Also, you will have to be very precise with the depth so your pen will slide in and out but have enough friction to not fall out.

Yes you are completely correct that the back plus scale is thicker. I will be doing this very slowy and carefully and testing it as I go. I also have some extra plus scales off a knife to compare it to as I go. And I will photograph the entire process. :)

Have you started the project yet? I'm dying to see the stages and end result. Don't they make Plus scales in stay glow?

That's the problem, they don't! Are you listening Victorinox? I haven't started yet, I'll post when I do. I haven't because I'm waiting for a knife to come in the mail that I will put them on.

How is it going with this process?  Please do this and do it well... I have a Climber in Stay Glow that is dying to have a pen put in it so it gets all the pocket time again.

Stay Glow is by far the sexiest color on the Vics... but I NEED the pen in the scales!!!!

I forgot completely. I guess I'll try soon. I might as well, scales aren't any good sitting in a drawer.

Best of luck in the process. I hope it works and generates some good information. I am also hoping that someone who has attempted, successfully or not, to make any type of plus scales would have some more information to contribute. Although I particularly like StayGlow scales, it would be worthwhile to be able to convert any nylon scales to plus, at least until Victorinox gets on the stick. Again, good luck!

I once made plus scales for my Outrider. I used some little tiny files. It worked fine, though the 111s have pretty thick scales on the thumb slide side.

I also tried it with Cellidor Huntsman scales, but I botched it. Cellidor is far less forgiving than nylon.

Ya nylon would work better for sure.  I haven't cut stayglows, but I have done mods for one fellow who wanted some 84mm cellidor scales made into plus scales.  I used my mill to cut that slot and it worked out just fine.

The only tip I'll mention is that dont cut the slot straight.  I did and the pen wasn't retained too tightly, and then I noticed that the slot on standard plus scales has a slight bend in it to hold the pen in better.  I just put a slight bend on the pen I did to get some retention, but if I was to do it again, i would make the channel slightly bent.

Good luck!

You can cut the slot with a VERY steady hand and a ball end bit in a Dremel, but it is fraught with risk.

Another method is to cut a groove in a piece of metal and then clamp the scale to the metal with the groove lined up where the pen slot should be and GENTLY run a suitable size drill in the end.
I have used this method to cut a pen slot in some Jigged Bone Plus Scales for a Swiss Champ. Safest is to use a pin-vice to hold the drill rather than using any powered drill. even a cordless.
The one I have has a chuck on it about the size of the one you can get to fit a Dremel
