Monarch 3?
on: August 04, 2013, 12:56:53 AM
LM have his on this UK site:

Leatherman® Style PS Multi Tool & Monarch 3 LED Flashlight Combo Pack. Costs £26.99 with free delivery. Given that the Style PS cannot be bought in the UK for less than £25, it seems like a reasonable good deal.

But I have been trying to find some info on the Monarch 3 light, and have pretty much failed to turn up any info on it.

Can anyone help?

Having said that, the Monarch 300 by itself seems to cost upwards of £15 (if it was available), so is this a 'very good deal'?

[read the review on these forums of it as well which was relatively positive]

for the two that seems like a decent price.  The Monarch 300 isn't the brightest light out there but I still like it.

edit - Just had a look at the combo pack and that isn't the Monarch 300.  I don't think I have ever seen that little torch before.

Hmm...that is interesting. You are correct Gareth. That isn't a Monarch 300. I just found that same image after seeing your reply..

Seeing that the Monarch line has been retired, and it isn't representative of any of them, nor does it match anything that LED LENSER currently uses...no clue.

Heinnie Haynes have some stats listed here: http://www.heinnie.com/Style-PS-&-Monarch-3-Combo/p--10670/

Quote
Monarch 3 -
ANSI max luminous flux (lm): 16
ANSI max beam distance (m): 18
ANSI peak beam density: 81
ANSI working time (h): 18
Impact resistance level: 1m pass
Dust-proof & waterproof level(IPXX): IPX4
Battery quantity & type: 1xAAA (included)

Features -
Anodised aluminium body
Perfect keychain size
Keyring attachment

16 lumen for 18 hours sounds pretty good to be honest, but I always take manufacturers numbers with a pinch of salt. :)

Ok, well that is interesting. I cannot find mention of Monarch 3 on the internet.

We can assume it is made by leatherman?

I can't say. It appears to be factory packaged in Leatherman's usual blister style packaging. The odd thing here...must be for UK markets only. The combo packages I see listed in the US feature a LED LENSER.

16 lumen for 18 hours sounds pretty good to be honest, but I always take manufacturers numbers with a pinch of salt. :)

That's a very wise approach.  The above figures mean it will produce 16 lumens initially (with a fresh battery), and if you leave it switched on it will produce less and less over time, so only 10% of those 16 lumens after 18 hours.

The only way to tell what a light will produce over time is a run-time graph that shows the drop-off in intensity over time.

Here is a brief description of the ANSI lighting standards as they relate to flashlight brightness and run time:

Quote
Light Output
Total lumens of output, measured in an integrating sphere after the light has been on for 30-120 seconds. 30 seconds gives a little time for the LED to get hot and the battery voltage to sag which will usually result in a lower output number.

Runtime
The amount of continuous runtime (in minutes) until the light output drops to 10% of its original value (measured 30 seconds after turning the light on).
This test is done using the batteries included with the flashlight.[1] If no batteries are included, the test is done using the manufacturer-recommended batteries.[1]
The test is done in an integrating sphere just like the lumen test with light output measured every 15 minutes. 10% of brightness probably gives inflated runtime numbers. In the past, some testers used 50% to be a little more practical, but with most batteries, the drop-off is usually pretty quick and the time between 50% and 10% usually is not long.

I knew I'd read those guidelines before, but I'd forgotten that the figure was 10%.  Cheers mate. :)

another shot of the Monarch 3 and Style PS;

looks like this is a lensless type light, in the same vein as the fenix e01.

If nothing else Raukodur, I suspect if you buy it you'll be one of the very few to own one. :D

Well it's a simple way of mounting a LED and having a built-in reflector.  Here's a shot of the Fenix E01

Basically there is no lens in front of the LED and the reflector is simply shaped from the aluminium head rather than being a separate piece.  Now none of this is actually bad, but it does mean this will be a very floody light beam, rather than having a tight spot (all assuming I'm correct about the Monarch 3 of course).

Well I've ordered it anyway, if you 'like' it on facebook while ordering you get another £1 off, so in total £25.99 with free delivery for the Style PS and this strange torch.

Will probably be giving the torch to my wife for her keyring.

Do you have a Fenix E01 or a Mag Solitaire for some side by side pics once you get it?

Hi all, a bit late posting here but I also found Monarch 6 with a Leatherman blister pack, namely the LM Sidekick, Z-Rex + the Carabiner. I can not find any actually info on the Monarch 6 on the inter-web. Nice torch will be using it in conjunction with my Led Lenser P3.

I'm assuming they were made specifically for Leatherman by LedLenser but I can't find them on LedLenser's page by any name. Leatherman library doesn't have any reference to them either. :-\

I know it's very hard to tell looking at pics on the internet, but the Monarch 3 just doesn't feel like an LED Lenser.  My gut says these are being made to a budget.
