Sideclip lost
on: December 30, 2013, 03:21:11 AM
Hey guys 1st post here I've been a sideclip user since they come out and I recently lost my last one I had hoarded. I have 2 questions
1) is there anything that is available out there that compares to the slim simple sideclip I can't believe leatherman hasn't released anything comparable (doesn't have to be LM)
2) I have 2 broken sideclip multi tools one with a broken knife blade and the other broken at the plier jaws.  If I send these in for warranty will they fix them or replace with something different?
I bought a wingman as a replacement and do not like it. Is eBay my only choice? about 7-8 yrs ago I bought six of them for $15 dollars apiece on clearance at sports authority and finally lost my last one I can't stand not having one for edc

Welcome to MTo
The Lm Sideclip as with all LM tool carry a 25 year warranty and the Sideclip was produced from 1998-2004 so it is covered.  Make sure you make the warranty paper work sentimental and if for whatever reason they cannot fix your tool then they will send it back.  I cannot think of why they wouldn't be able to fix it since its not pinned but uses security torx.

yes welcome!

you may also want to send in both at the same time (making it easier on Leatherman) and of course check the sentimental field as Aloha007 said.

this way you save on shipping.  you will have to fill out two forms though
If I can help, let me know

Ok thanks for replies I will send both one of them is useless anyway broken it two pieces.  I'm sure leatherman had sales figures to justify discontinuing it but there seems to still be interest judging by eBay prices and bidding activity

The interest in the Sideclip is because the tool is pretty great.  The thinness and simple tool set make it very handy to have on hand.  The tool being discontinued ( retired ) makes the tool more sought after ( collectors ) and thus the high price.

The Sideclip is a thin MT but to answer you questions about MTs that might be a good replacements here are a few I just pulled out for comparison.

Left to right;
Sideclip/LM Pocket Survival Tool/LM Skeletool/SOG Paratool/SOG Pocket Power Plier

I'd say the LM PST or SOG PPP are probably the closest in terms of thinness but not as thin as the Sideclip or as light weight.
I don't see you having a problem getting your Sideclip fixed but I wanted to show you some good tools non the less.  Leatherman has an outstanding warranty so I'm confident in saying you are in great hands once you send it.

My pleasure  :hatsoff:,  the Skeletool has a pocket clip and the carabiner however it really isn't for everyone.  I'm certain LM will get you up and running with your Sideclips.

Since you have two with broken parts. I would make one good tool out of the two broken ones. Why pay postage. When you can do it yourself. Leatherman will proably replace your Sideclips with a Wingman or other cheap replacement.
What? Enablers! Are you serrrrious? Where? I dont see any.

That's why there's a 'sentimental' field. If you check that, and they CAN'T repair it, they WILL NOT replace it with a newer tool.

So, no fear in trying to have Leatherman fix them. Worst case, you're out the cost of postage.

I know of one person who had their MINI replaced with a Kick. Others have not faired as well either. You always run the risk of having it replaced.

It's found!!!  I forgot I used it to loosen a bolt and nut that holds a lock bracket on a gang box.  I remembered when I returned to the job and seen the box after 10 long days without it.  It was laying inside the box right where I used it last.  People give me crap all the time because I use it for everything like I'm just making do with it,  when you all know you can do the work of a whole tool box usually with one tool

Great news!

Maybe you need to build up a second user from the two damaged ones, just to be on the safe side :pok:

Does anyone know if the pliers and knife on a PST the same as those on the SideClip ?  If they are you could buy a good PST and cannabalise it to fix both broken SideClips, so you'd have 3 working ones again.  If you prefer a CE blade to a PE then get a PST II.

Remember to use a little heat on the knurled screws to loosen off the threadlocker.

Thanks again sending both broken ones back tomorrow I need at least one in backup at all times.   After checking out this forum I'm kinda interested in expanding my library of MT there are some unbelievable collections on here.  I'm a very dedicated user but never considered collecting after seeing some of them I'm sure I need a few more

Glad you will be hanging around, most of us pair our MultiTools with other tools like Victorinox or Wenger, dedicated folders, and other misc tools that suit our needs/likes.  There are some great MTs from other manufactures and yes there are some AMAZING collections here. I'll be the first to suggest checking out the MTs made by Victorinox especially the Spirit.  Enjoy MTo and ask around and join in discussions as we are a most friendly and helpful lot.

The Spirit is on the far right the red kits are plus kits that include bits and an L wrench that make the Spirit or Swisstool ( the other 3 MTs ) quite complete tools.

Glad to hear you found yours! I couldn't imagine losing mine - though I do have a backup myself...

As others have mentioned, there is simply nothing else out there that matches the slimness (especially with the excellent pocket clip) like the Sideclip, unfortunately.

Kick with the optional pocket clip, Sidekick/Wingman and Skeletool/Freestyle are the closest...

Yes my first MT was a victorinox Swiss Army knife I had it for long time and was very upset when I lost it. At the time I ran hvac service and remember using it daily and ended up leaving it somewhere on a call I don't know witch one it was but it had small pliers and scissors and mainly screwdrivers and such not a super big one with everything on it it was about 3/4" wide

to be honest I was kinda disappointed in the wingman although I only used it for a few days the phillips is very cheap looking I do like being able to get to the knife blade without opening it

The plier head is the same size for a Sideclip and PST, but the blade on the Sideclip is shorter than the PST. They (Leatherman) had to shorten it for the Sideclip so that it wouldn't block the plier head from folding into the tool properly. Someone could still grind down the point to shorten a PST blade to work.

Personally, I would swap the parts out myself instead of sending both of them into for repair. Unless you specifically put it on the warranty form telling them to cannabilize the parts of the two to return a fully functional one back, they would most likely just send both of them back to you unrepaired. Might be better off emailing them first and getting a firm answer that they would do the repair of one tool from two.

The screw head pattern on the Sideclip is the same type they used for the Original Wave and needed two TS10 (torx security 10)bit to remove.

I still have my Sideclip and got it back in 2000 when I lost my PST, which was returned to me six months later when someone saw my lastname engraved on it.

The Sidekick is not a good replacement for a Sideclip, too heavy and thick. A Kick with the sideclip would be the closest in size, weight and tools.

Thanks your right I need to swap the knife blade out and just send one back without checking sentimental cause whatever they do is better than one broken in half, luckily as usual I've been lollygaggin around and haven't mailed them yet I just need to get that torx bit
Why didn't I think of that

I actually found a seller on ebay that sells two TS10 screwdivers as a set for $5.99 with free shipping last month. Got it in 2 days. My Sideclip needed tightening and I figured they'd be a good thing to get instead of squeezing the sides of the screws. May come in handy if I ever find an Original Wave and need to be adjusted.

I sent a Blast in to warranty and got a Rebar in return as a replacement. I still have another Blast as a backup so I didn't really mind the Rebar replacement. Besides, lots of new/used Blast on ebay if I really want or need another one.

The Sideclip and PST plier head may be similar sized but the Sideclip plier head is flat on one side so it can fit into that narrow handle along side the knife blade. That is also why the knife blade is shorter on the Sideclip than the PST.     :)

I sent my disassembled sideclip in to leatherman and they rebuilt it for me no charge.  I would just ask them if they could do that for you with parts from your two broken sideclips.
