Light Blue translucent scales 91mm
on: December 29, 2013, 05:56:50 PM
In the attached picture is a Climber with LIGHT Blue translucent scales.
I didn't find such scales in Sakwiki entry on translucent scales.
Are they factory original but out of production for 91 mm SAKs ?
Are they  especially rare ?
Where might they still be available ?
Shalom

Felinvet has a great selection.
If fancy scales are your thing you should look on Ebay at used Swiss Army Knives. They come in so many colors and patterns it's ridiculous...and awesome.

I`m not sure that the scales on the Climber in the photo are standard Vic sapphire as they look much lighter than my sapphire scales and the rest of the knife and background appear to be correctly exposed. The example on Felinevet`s site looks as if it has been brightened in order to clean up the background and reveal more detail in the scales.
I`ve had problems in the past comparing photos of knives with different shades of the same colour and shot by different people with different light sources ( e.g.hot pink/pink, yellow/pale yellow/light lemon) to the point where I wasn`t sure what I was looking at. IIRC there was a recent thread on the different shades of translucent scales and further examples and wisdom may be found there. Or contact Tim.

Exactly so. It is hard to be sure of the color in some photos.
The light sapphire is what I referred to.
The picture in the link you sent makes it very clear that there are two distinct translucent sapphires, one light the other dark.
thanks for the info !

I've stumbled on the same question a few weeks ago and still didn't find an answer. Reinier made a nice picture of all the different colors some time ago and there you can see the two different shades of blue, but no third one... So maybe he can give you an answer to your question... Here's my "question"...

UPDATE : Just saw the last two answers... That was the picture I was talking about...

It could just be the blue scales fading over time. The onyx ones fade to a brown over time.

@ GigaHz : That was my guess too, but it's strange that this happens to such a strong material... When I buy a used one I always start sanding away the deep scratches and polish it back to its mirror finish. Even after this "rough" treatment the scales stay the same colour... On the other hand there's no info out there of another blue shade, so...

@ Shalom : Thank you!!!  ;)

I think you are only polishing a clear layer on top of all the translucent scales. I don't see how polishing it would effect the color. The Onyx ones had a bad batch or something, cause some of them turn brown or orange after time.

Thanks for the help !
That seller doesn't ship overseas (I checked with him about a different item about a month ago.)
I'll wait until something else crops up, (hopefully in new condition  :D )
Thanks again, I appreciate it.
