Victorinox Spirit Steel?
on: January 19, 2014, 07:43:24 AM
Hi, everyone.

I have read a fair amount of discussion of SAK(non-pliers based MTs, such as the 91mm models) steel, and did learn from the Elsener letter that SAK steel used are as follow:

Blades:    x55CrMo14      56HRC
Parts:    x39Cr13      52-56 HRC
Springs:    x20Cr13      49 HRC

However, I have just searched high and low on the topic of steel used for Victorinox Swisstool and Swisstool Spirit.  But the closest thing I found was a post from Syph007:

Vic MTs are in a whole other league as far as quality.  Its actually made from steel (similiar to 440) that is really hard to rust.  Leathermans rust like mad for me and lots of others (they use 420).

I can still pick out things to improve on the swisstools, like they need a clip and lanyard option, but other than that they are as close to MT perfection that currently exists on this planet. :D

Does anyone know what steel do they actually use?

We already have info on the Vic steel mentioned a couple of times and it's good to get a confirmation on that.

Victorinox:
x55CrMo14 for blades (56 HRC),
x39Cr13 for parts (52 – 56 HRC)
x20Cr13 for backsprings (49 HRC)

Wenger:
X46Cr13 hardened to 54-55 HRC (probably for blades  )

I don't remember seeing info on Swisstools and Spirits but I'll do a search and update. :salute:

OK, I'm translating from german here so I'm not sure if it's the right terminology used but seems the Vic steel is hardened at 1040°C and then quenched at 160°C so the blades get a RC hardness of RC 56. (RC = Rockwell C, unit for hardness)

The saws, scissors and nail files are hardened to RC 53, screwdrivers, can openers and awls to RC
52 and the corkscrews and backsprings to RC 49.

The metal saw is work hardened and hard chromed? to achieve a hardness that can cut iron and steel.

No specific info for the Swisstol/Spirit but I guess these apply to it as well.

They are also polished and buffed to seal the steel pores. Leathermans aren't polished but more on the brushed side of finishing providing a lot of open sites for rust to form. That being said, if your multitool is getting rusty, you aren using it enough :)

Nikola,
Thanks for the translation, I too do hope to be able to find something concrete on that topic.

Eric,
Good point on polished vs unpolished.  Either I am not using enough Leatherman, or getting my sweaty palms on them too often without giving the TLC it deserves. :D
