Swiss emergency alert test
on: February 10, 2014, 09:12:15 PM
So it was said that this is the new emergency alert test for the Swiss. You know the one that pops up on your TV and sounds like a nuclear reactor is on the fritz. Supposedly the Swiss Government felt this was a bit more pleasant to watch. I have to agree. Can we get any of our Swiss members to confirm that this actually plays or will play in Switzerland. The reason I decided to post it was in the sequence there is a SAK.  :tu:

Just watched it again and the scissors actually appear to be the older screw style for some reason.

Couldn't get it to play :( Do you have a link on Youtube, Liveleak, etc?

I sometimes have this problem with US-websites, I just get a black screen where a video is supposed to be. Is this a nation-/IP-/sth-else-filter at work? ???

It's just and advert for people to know there'll be a alarm testing. They test it once a year.

For real?

I thought the goat-slapping was kinda funny, but it might probably offend some animal right group.

I definitively don't watch enough TV, 'cause I missed that one.

Yup, we have a National Siren system and honestly when I was little it used to freak me out so much I built my first emergency kit (you know, crayons, paper, my favorite book, everything I would need not to get too bored in the bunker*). No, its not every Wednesday but only once in January.

Here is what it sounds: Swiss Emergency Siren
There are actually several different "melodies", but no one really knows them :D. The point is that if you hear them, stay inside, turn the radio on etc. Was actually quite helpful on certain occasion, e.g. when one of the larger chemical factories caught fire, to warn the people to stay out of this area, or if you are in this area close your windows.

*Until recently every house you built in Switzerland was required to have a bomb shelter (costs about the same as an average house in the USA ;)).

Farming is quite irrelevant in Switzerland, so as long as you don't slap a cat or a dog your golden

P.S.: I find it interesting that something like this makes the international media ???

Danke, this link worked  :tu:
I liked the rolling Emmentaler!

I like that you get warned on TV before those tests. Here in Germany the sirens are tested once a year, but the only warning would be in the regional newspaper (which I do not read, as there is better journalism in the BILD  ).
And in our new hometown, the sirens are used to alert the fire department volunteers.
in the middle of the night, about once a week.  :o
And while they are useful, most people do not know the signals anymore.

The only thing I like about the BILD is their advertising slogan:

Cynism at its best :D

I remember our emergency system. We had sirens here up to the early 90s when they all got dismantled. We no longer have such a warning system.

Switzerland, where they do lots of things right.

In Vermont, most towns still have the old fire alarms, which were military surplus air raid sirens that were usually installed in clusters or were souped up for volume. We went to pagers and now most agencies are phone based, but the alarms are still there and you can hear the ones here for a good five, six miles. If you are indoors. I've heard them sound for flood where I am, and they pulled me out of a sound sleep at 4 miles.
