Thanks, I just got it today!  It's my first nice watch, the "moonwatch".  It's the one that NASA chose for all their manned Gemini and Apollo space flights.

Here's one with my Hewlett Packard HP-67 calculator.  The Hewlett Packard calculators were used by NASA astronauts to calculate their trajectories and orbits during their flights.  The HP-65 calculator was used along with the Omega "moonwatch" by the astronauts of Apollo 13 when they were on the other side of the moon to recalculate their orbit and trajectory.  My HP-67 is almost the same as the HP-65 but a lot cheaper :)

Cool background story! There were HP calculators back in the early 70's? I didn't know that. :)

Got any other old NASA related stuff?

x2 on the calculators. Wonder how much one cost during those years if the general public wanted to score one.

Very nice looking watch!

That's it for the NASA stuff, but, maybe in the future I'll get some more calculators and the 1960's Omega Speedmaster Pro, which is almost identicial to today's models in the picture.

Since you're interested, I'll give you a brief history of the Hewlett Packard calculators, because IMHO it is fascinating.

In Feb 1972, HP makes the world's first handheld scientific calculator, the HP-35:

HP did an internal marketing study and found that they thought too few people would be interested in an expensive handheld scientific calculator for it to be profitable.  The legendary CEO Bill Hewlett, did not care.  He thought it was too useful for engineers and that HP should make it even if HP were to lose money on it.

It was priced at $395 which is a LOT of money for 1972 and it sold out.

The HP-35 calculator was so powerful and advanced, that its mathematical algorithms could NOT be fully checked and verifed by any mainframe computer system in its day.  Neither the Burroughs B5500 or IBM mainframes were powerful enough to fully test this handheld calculator.  The initial calculator as it turns out, calculates a few calculations incorrectly, since testing by a more powerful computer was impossible in its day, regardless of how large the mainframes were.  When HP offered to replace all the 25,000 calculators that were already sold (which is an enormous volume for any of HP's products and would have caused HP to lost a lot of money), 75% of the owners loved their HP-35 so much that they refused to send it in, even for a newer, revised HP-35.

In 2000, Forbes ASAP named the HP-35 as one of the 20 "all time products" that have changed the world.

They have a lot of "famous" calculators that changed the world.  The HP-65 had a built-in magnetic card strip reader (like my HP-67 in my photo) and was used by the Apollo missions.  The later HP-41 was used in the Space Shuttle missions.

The original HP-35 goes for over $1000 on eBay now!

The larger SAKs are pretty heavy.  Here are my favorite Juices, and yes, I actually have 4 of the Juice SC2 (clear anodized aluminum handles)   :)

I'm no authority on the history of NASA :)  But, I would most definitely think that today's calculators are a heck of a lot more powerful than the Gemini and Apollo computers.  Even my iPhone cell phone, which runs pretty much the full desktop Mac OS may arguably be more powerful than the computers in the SPACE SHUTTLE!

I just saw the Apollo 13 movie (Tom Hanks, et al) last night on cable, and I am in such awe that these missions were done when the computing technology was so utterly primitive.  It took real manpower and ingenuity in those days.  Hurling through space in a metal canister with an Omega Speedmaster Pro wind-up watch and a HP-65 calculator to determine how you were going to orbit the moon and get shot back to Earth.. amazing..

Here are my oldest SAKs.  The black SAK is not Wenger and not a Victorinox.  It is from the 3rd manufacturer of SAKs that only made them for a few years.  It is apparently from the Forges de Vallorbe circa 1885.  The smaller one in horn is circa 1900.

I bought these from an Austrian dealer who purchased them from a literally old collector.

There is very little information on the SAKs from the Forges de Vallorbe.  Vallorbe used to be a bustling city during the Middle Ages for producing iron tools and weapons.  I don't know why they stopped producing SAKs for the government.

I'm not 100% sure, but I thought it was the Forges de Vallorbe and Wenger that started making SAKs first, and then Victoriniox later.

BTW, some of you might be surprised that I do collect and like SAKs since I seem to just blab about how great Leatherman is all the time   ::)
I just don't talk about SAKs on MT.org because I'm always posting on the "other" site for SAKs that Def moderates.

I think i'm correct in saying the Space Shuttle built in computers are fairly primitive, i'm sure they rely on laptops for most stuff.
Heard that somewhere   ???

Damn i've just got to get one of the larger SAK, even if I never use it they look so good  :D
