I need values for two used victorinoxes
on: January 26, 2014, 07:36:01 PM
First is a Grand Prix. Maybe someone can help me with the vintage.

Next is a passenger model. This one's corkscrew seems to be broken off at the very end

Scale wear on these is moderate. Assuming I clean them up and get the rust off, how much do you think they'd be worth separately? Or should I sell them as a pair?

The Grand Prix is from the late 80´s.
The Passenger ist pre ´86.

Passengers are fairly rare.  Therefore, I wouldn't sell them as a pair.

You can date the knives here based on the tools: http://victorinox.metodi.me/91mmtools.php

The passanger looks like an explorer minus the scizzors.  Probably a bit more pocket friendly

The last Passanger in excellent condition sold for $80, Grand Prix go for a lot less. $20 on averege.

You can check eBay under advanced search option for completed listings to see how much something sold for in the last few months.

Yes.  I carry a Passenger frequently, and definitely consider it more pocket-friendly than the Explorer.  Pocket-friendliness goes down quickly for me as layers number more than 3 in the 91mm/cellidor line.

I do the same, and have found completed listings a great tool for valuation.

so would 40 for the passenger and 20 for the grand prix be resonable starting bids? (USD)

It´s hard to tell. Since your Grand Prix is from the late 80´s. And one from the early 80´s (pre ´84) is easier to find.

IMO, nailing down an accurate starting price isn't really that important.  What is important is how you represent the knife for sale.  Include an accurate, detailed description, a concise title, and offer the best photos you possibly can.  If you do that, you can start a little low and can expect that collectors who want the knife will bid up to close to "market value".  Keep in mind also that bidders are often turned off when you use a reserve price.

Most of the best buys I've made on Ebay were for knives that were not represented well.

The Grand Prix you have there is from circa 1989-1991.  It does not have the center tool, the fine screwdriver.

Grand Prix's typically have the following bottom tools:
- awl
- fine screwdriver
- Phillips screwdriver

Pre-83, they had the square Phillips with can key.  About that time, it went to round Phillips with can key.
About 1986-1987 timeframe, it had the newer fine screwdriver, hole in the awl, and round Phillips with can key.  About 1989-1991, no fine screwdriver.

1992, you had awl with hole, multipurpose hook, and Phillips with no can key.  I bought it NIB in Korea in 2009.

The Grand Prix was discontinued in the mid 1990's it seems.

I have all the variations.

Agreed but, AFAIK, it's the only tool available online to get you in the ballpark.
