I thought I'd mention this, since you're new to SAKs. The old scales will come off, but it might take a little bit of plastic with them, so putting old scales back on, you might find them kind of loose. The scales are just press-fit into place, but if you get the factory replacements from Felinevet, they should be perfect. You might want to get some advice about the best way to press them on, as it takes a good bit of force.

Someone will be along any second, I'm sure,  to explain how, or point to another thread that already has.

I hope not, but I guess it's best to be prudent.

Unless you just don't like the color, I think the scales on yours in the picture look pretty decent. You might just consider keeping it as-is for a while, to see if you even like the knife enough to make new scales worthwhile.

$10 for that Climber is a good place to start.

If you don't find that the tools on the 91mm line are tough enough for you, buy a 93mm one such as a Farmer.  If you don't find that's durable enough, then I don't believe you're going to find any SAK that meets your durability requirement.

I use to be one of those types. Carrying around my Tac folders saying in these exact words "I like to carry a real knife." PSSST... I was arrogant and stupid. Made up excuses like I need a locking blade and a bunch of other crap. Made comments about self defense. (I carry a gun, a knifes a tool a gun is a weapon)

Then I learned.
A knife is a knife is a knife, but a SAK is a mini tool box in your pocket.
The other tools on my SAK get used just as much as the blade. Nice form factor in your pocket, (wish they came with a clip) most multipliers don't sit in the pocket anywhere near as nice. They come in a plethora of colors, finishes, and materials. (can match your outfit)
Lets not forget the social acceptance of a SAK in public. Snap out a Tac folder and you'll get dirty looks as if you whipped out a gun, pull out a SAK and you'll get smiles and people reminiscing or saying "I always wanted one of those".

Well, it's all been said, but I might as well join in regardless.

Victorinox is great in general because of the amazing (better than LM, Gerber, and SOG, for sure) fit and finish alongside the refinement that goes into their tools. Heck, look at the can/phillips and bottle/flathead layer, it's a genuine triumph of design. They've spent a long time building these things, and it shows, because individual tools in a vic don't just all work --they work really well.

When it comes to SAKs, that and the available selection mean you can get pretty much every tool you want to have, all of which will work very well, in an extremely efficient form factor. It's a real challenge to find a competing product that will be able to do as much, let alone do it as well. I think it's impossible to find one that'll both while being smaller.

This seems to shine through nearly as much on the Swisstools. The Swisstool and Spirit are two of my favourite MTs of all time. I doubt you'll be unhappy with your Spirit, the Swisstools are all excellent. If I had to pick one pocket knife and one multi tool to use for the rest of my life (heaven forbid,) I'd probably pick the full size Swisstool and a CT34.

It's a pleasure to hold a well made tool in your hand, and vics fit the bill.

I think I could safely add that should the Spirit not strike your fancy, you won't have much problem finding someone here to take it off your hands, if the price is right.

My last purchase for a bit... I totally got caught up in a Swiss surge or something.

Can anyone tell me about this? It looked neat & the price seemed good so.....

Hmmm....  On Sunday we had this:

Seriously, what's the allure of the SAK? Do they have great warranties? Is it their size? Is  it being in a click? Fad? I have never been into them.. Could it be like my flaslight collection? For you SAK owners, enlighten me.

Now he has a 'Champ coming (at a great price, I might add).  Either we are good spokespeople for SAKs, or Dale is impressionable.

Enjoy the Swisschamp Dale!  I know you will.

great choice Dale  the only reason I didn't get a "Beast" is the Champion Plus was on xmas sale at the time (like 24 bucks)

I did get my GF (computer geek) a CyberTool 34 lite with ruby scales and she luvs it. (several of us got it here in a group buy...loooong story but did we get a deal!)

Now we gotta get your wife hooked on SAKs   :D

Hey Dan! It's good to be back.  :tu:  You are too kind.

fish scaler = olive fork

The older fish scalers are even handier--they are magnetized.  They're great for fishing small screws out from impossible spots.  Vic stopped magnetizing them at some point...

Oh Dale...

Rarely have I encountered someone who got the SAK bug as badly or as quickly as you.

I recommend going down to Walmart and buying something super-crappy, to sort of sour yourself on all tools for a bit. It won't cure you, but it might just slow the progression... a little. :D
