An old .... make that very old alox farmer :)
on: February 08, 2014, 06:04:12 PM

Found this today still in its uncleaned condition bit rough but it may be useful for modding (that bit was a joke :)  )

Oh I forgot to show the Awl

Quite happy with that  :D

Wow, I'd say that blade has been sharpened a couple time! But I'm sure after a good cleaning that would be a beat around pocket knife.. JR

Shame about the blade but it is indeed an excellent model. You could take it apart and put on some new pins with a new blade, but I guess you lose the authenticity and the Elinox stamp...

That is a fantastic find. Makes the Pioneer 2223 look common by comparison.

Agreed only ever seen it on pre 60's pioneers in alox .... Always a good day if I can find something interesting :)

Ditto - I've never seen that awl on anything but the very earliest Pioneers. I've always wondered if a Farmer or other alox knife would pop up with one. This has to be one of the first Farmers made. Too bad about the main blade. I'd be tempted to send it back to Victorinox with a good Elinox blade of the same vintage and see if they'd swap them.

Nice score. I have a Pioneer with the long/round awl but that Farmer beats it hands down, even with the semi-borked blade.

 maybe I could graft a saw into my pioneer...

Mmmm sending it for a tidy up at Victorinox is very tempting but I think once it has been taken apart it will lose something ..... if they were a bit more common I might go for it :)

Adding a saw to a round awl pioneer is a shocking idea they should be preserved ;) ..... I have genuinely looked into adding scissors to one though does that make me a bad person >:D

relax, it was just a (not very funny) joke. That old Pioneer is probably the central gem of my collection.

It's older than me and deserves respect.

I would never take to that one with the tools. I was even especially gentle with cleaning it when it arrived as an unexpected bonus in a lot of 10 old knives.
I could only see the front side in the auction photos and thought it was a "regular" old cross pioneer.

That is the best feeling .... I have done the same :)

This one was awl down at a car boot sale / flea market .... it did make the bartering a bit tricky I had to pay the full price when he saw the look on my face :)

That was pretty cheap, indeed. But in the history there were many times I payed too much for a knife. Often I bought something that turned out not be that what I expected.
I don`t know the value for this knife. Never saw one for sale. In this case, I think rarity does not mean high value. There are many other knives out there not that rare but higher in value, because most collectors want to possess the things other collectors allready have. If something is too rare, nobody`s interested in buying it, because the market for collectors is not big enough. Alox special run knives are that high in value, because the numbers produced fit perfect to the market. The damascus limited edition or the soldier replica are not that high in value, because there are too many knives for a small market.

Missed this last year - But just linked through from Enki's recent post.

Love this old Farmer ... of course  :D

However isn't it a SAK that should not really exist  ??? In that the alox scales came in in '61 with the 'new' Soldier design, and the old awl was retired that same year?? - Or did the aloxcales come in a bit earlier??

I guess they must have done, if you guys have Pioneers with the old awl.

As far as I know .... which may not be far :)

The first Pioneers in red gold and silver had the nice awl and I would guess this was the original plan for the 61 soldier ..... but the rounded awls and the extra cutout in the scales must have upped the unit price and the army wanted a cheaper knife so the pressed steel awl was born ..... a sad day ... but all in all it was a pretty good compromise :)

It would be interesting to know if there are army prototypes out there with a rounded awl .... maybe even with a 61 stamp ok that can be my new target knife :)

Wow. I get excited when I find a knife from the 80's I couldn't imagine how cool finding something like that would be.
Jeep the SAK of the auto world or is it SAK the Jeep of the Knife world?
