Swapping scales over on Wenger Evo knives
on: February 12, 2014, 12:00:00 PM
I am sure this will have been asked before but:  How does one remove the scales on a Wenger Evo without damaging the scales or the knife?  I have two Evos and am considering swapping the scales over if it is an easy job.  :salute:

Wenger scales should be an easy swap. I've taken off loads of Wenger scales and never had a problem with them. Just take the toothpick and tweezers out, take something thin, like a SAK blade, get it in and lift till you hear the attachment point let go. Move to the next attachment point and repeat.

Hi Pingu, in the end I decided not to do it - I was going to swap some plain scales for Scout scales, but a mate wanted the Scout knife so I sold it to him and then sold the other one too.  :)

I have a black Evo 16.  Getting a red Evo 18.  Really want the 18 to be black.    I'll think about it, don't want to do any damage.  These non-grip Evos are getting hard to get, impossible in black.

When in doubt... put scales in hot water... plastic+heat+elastic deformation+???=profit.

Evos you can swap with other evos. Regular wenger scales do not fit.
If I remember correctly, wait, what was I saying?

OK, updating my post.  Red Evo 18 arrived in the post.  Fresh from watching Swissbianco swapping Victorinox scales and unable to resist a mod I want to do, went right ahead.

Anyway, job done, so quick there are no pics, sorry.

Didn't say "easy" because there is a small  problem in that Wenger Evo scales lip over the liners.  Found a precision screwdriver small enough to enter the (smaller than Victorinox) tweezer and toothpick slots.  Hardly took any force to get the first fixing to release, then a flat blade can be deployed (I used my Super Tinker small blade).  The other are fixings are easy.

Unlike my first ever Victorinox scale removal many years ago which left a little plastic on the collars, all four scales came off cleanly.

Normally I carry a Juice S2 but I'm upgrading my urban carry to include a saw so its pocket time for my black Evo 18 until I cut down a branch or two.

Fairly recent scales didn't seem to need warming but warmth might well benefit older plastic.
