LED Lenser P7.2

Haven't seen anything about the new LED Lenser P7.2 on here, and I got one a week or so ago so here we are.

I've got a few LED Lenser products…



They're amazing. The original P7 I've had for years, and I frequently use it for a gun mounted spotlight with a touch activated switch on my rifles. I do a lot of night hunting (once or twice a week) for rabbits, possums and generic pest control on dairy farms.

I use the P17 for spotting, then the P7 once I've seen something (as it's on the gun).

The new P7.2 is the next gen P7 that runs at 320 lumens instead of 200 lumens, with a larger lens and some minor improvements. Aside from the crappy matte paint job they've gone to, it's an improvement on an already fantastic torch.

In the field it's not a huge amount brighter. You get no extra range, just extra clarity on targets as you can see more detail.



LED Lenser are going a bit over the top with the number of models they have now (honestly it's ridiculous… to the point where it's nearly impossible what to choose). But if you're looking at getting a P7 (or any variation like that, like the T7 etc) you may as well get the better one!

Looking at a few specs, if I understand correctly the new one is only 320lm in "boost"?

It's unusual to find a torch running on 4*AAA batteries. Are you using rechargables?

I think you might be right there. Boost is just touching the button. Clicking it on (once to get into high beam) it is a tiny bit dimmer. Clicking a second time (low beam) is far dimmer (then the next click is off again).

Is it really unusual to find a torch that runs off that? I thought it was common?

I have two sets of rechargeables that I use in my EDC/truck torch (the regular P7). My rifle torch (the P7.2) gets a fresh set of non-rechargable batteries very regularly as I always want the most out of it.

It does mean I have a box of 50% charged AAA batteries at home. I guess if my TV remotes ever go flat I'm sorted for about 70 years.

Hehe. One of the drivers for me getting my first Fenix was so I could run it on discarded, 1/3rd used batteries from radio mics.

I would say that larger lights running on AAAs was pretty uncommon. Thing is they cost around about the same as a AA but are around 1/3rd the capacity so cost per mAh is much higher. Unless you need the compactness (like in a little keychain light) or want something relatively high voltage but light (like in a headtorch which often run on 3) there's not much point.

Not that there's anything wrong with it if it works for you, but for something around the 2-300lm mark I'd be expecting a CR123 or two, AA or two or maybe something like an 18650 with a long battery life.

I don't have that many lights: a Fenix E05 running on a single AAA, a Zebralight H52f running on either Enelopp AAs or a 14500 Li-Ion, a Fenix LD10 running on an Eneloop AA and an Eagletac T200C2 on an 18650. They all can run on disposables but the only one that does is the E05. Rechargeables tend to give better performance (especially in the 1*AA arena) and mean I don't worry about lighting things up like the Blackpool Illuminations and eating through batteries. Or having enough to run a house from half used AAAs

As you can see, the key thing there that I don't have is the focussing that you get with an LED Lenser.

The focusing is a deal breaker for me as I use them for hunting spotlights.

Interesting, I wonder why they went with AAA's. They have a bunch of rechargeable models but I have a hard time buying rechargeable things like that. I don't have a huge amount of confidence in them. Might have to consider one next time.

What's the point when you can get decent AAA rechargeables to put in a torch that you like?

      I have a LED Lenser/Coast HP7. It also runs on 4 AAA batteries. Coast is fond of the 3 to 4 AAA battery carrier and this is something I do not like about their lights. On a flashlight like this (Mine is rated at 251 lumens high, 30 low), AAA batteries are a poor power source. As someone else has pointed out, they are low capacity cells. Also, if the battery carrier breaks, you no longer have a working light. When you turn on the HP7, it is initially bright. It dims to about 50 % after a minute or two. I use NIMH batteries in mine. In this regard, calling it a 251 lumen light is misleading. They should have designed it to run off 2C cells. It is already a larger light (I like the size) and using 2 C's would not have made much of a difference. You can also buy pretty high capacity C NIMH cells and the runtime on high could have been greatly extended. Everything else about the flashlight I like, but I will not buy another one that uses AAA's and the carrier.

I'm not sure how Coast relates to LED Lenser?

I don't know why LED Lenser stamp their names on them. Someone told me they're just rebranded LED Lensers, but I doubt that as the Coast torches I've seen here aren't in the LED Lenser lineup and they're far cheaper.

I've got a (crap) head lamp from them and my brother had one of their torches which he replaced with a LL P7 and the only other experience with them has been what I've seen in shops so I could be quite wrong.
