Urgh why can't they make these in No 6 or 7's ???

I bought an Outdoor on a whim and its a great knife. Do I carry it? No as as its too big to edc :(

Its a shame as I love the lock as its easy to make legal with just a twist, and yet offers a good secure lock up :)

It's relatively easy to cut and slim the handle (wooden versions at least) and reconfigure the blade with a wheel/Dremel.

True, and I certainly have thought about it, but I'd miss the non serrated edge I'd have to lose :(

I am not sure this will sell at double the price of a normal nombre neuf.
Just from the features I would put the price at maybe 15€. But we will see.

The good news is that Opinel is exploiting the classic design and wants to produce more and more different knives. We may see more in the future that would satisfy new potential users.

I totally agree. They must be willing and able to develop their products to attract new (young) buyers in order to stay in the market.

I like the look of it, but Im just not a huge fan of friction folders.  I might pick one up anyhow as I do have a few opinels in the collection.

If I did not see something totally wrong, it is a locking knife like all the bigger Opinels. With the Vibrolock - twist as hard as you like - voila!

Yes true, I guess I think of those as friction folders since there is no backspring.

I think I already convinced myself I want one now.  :D

So, continuing in the original thread!  ;)

One thing I don't like is how much the closed blade protrudes from the handle. The ergonomics won't be good for screwdriving, me thinks.

I'm thinking it will actually be better than most of the multitool/knives out there.  The Kershaw and Leatherman knives have squared handles that really aren't that great for (cover the childrens' ears) extended screwing.  At least this one has a mostly rounded handle (like a traditional screwdriver) with the blade spine protruding out to increase grip in wet areas or just give extra leverage on a tough screw.

At least that's my thought- I am looking forward to trying this one out myself.  That yellow one is indeed very drool worthy!

Changing the blade to a standard one shouldn't be too difficult. Sparky posted a video recently a mod done on one of the standard ones. Taking out the blade took only a minute.

I was wondering about putting a regular shaped blade into the outdoor survival ones.  I hate the blade in those, they look ridiculous, but I like the handle.

The blades quite a lot thicker on the outdoor mate at 2.7mm compared to their normal ones :)

The outdoor blade shape is great and the shackle key makes the blade OHO. So the problem is the serrated part. I want to reconfigure my blade too and now I have a Dremel I think I'm going to do it, but I would prefer a factory plain edge blade.

I agree. The reason my outdoor does not see much use is because of the serrations.
I wonder how many emails we would have to send to opinel to convince dem to make a pe version of the outdoor?

Hmmm I could try re profiling the blade but those serrations are pretty deep, alot of metal would need to be removed.

Here's what I would like to do to one.

1. Remove serrations / or drop in a new PE blade
2. Drill a hole in the end on the non whistle side and slot in a firesteel
3. I wish the ring lock was spring loaded.  Open blade and it would lock once extended.  I think its possible.

There seems to be a MASSIVE disconnect between manufactures of combo edge blades and the target audience.  Every poll or discussion on the topic I have ever seen conclude they would prefer a PE over CE, so what would they make a CE?  Better to make a dual blade openel with one blade being the saw blade.

Actually that's what puzzles me. We seem to be on the same page on most of these discussions on various forums, most people prefer PE. But I remember from a SHOT show video a year or two ago a Benchmade representative saying that the combo edged blades were their biggest seller.

Thing is guys, that we may not be the target market

It's kind of the same thing as the Wingman/Suspension thing. Neither are necessarily great tools, but they're not aimed at tool nuts. The Oppie Outdoor is the kinda thing you'd see at Blacks...ideal fodder for the newbie
There is no beginning,or ending, and for this we are thankful, cos now is hard enough to understand!

Yep,  MTO, BF etc. members are really a very small part of target audience.
I know several people that are keen to have a saw style edge, as they feel it cuts some materials better.

The funny thing is, serrations DO do a great job on fibrous materials, Vic serrated blades for example are very good at rope cutting.

BUT, the funny thing about the opinel is the serrations are so poorly done they cut really badly.  There is a youtube review video and they show how badly it performs in that task. So... fail.

I have sent an email to them asking them nicely if they could make a PE version. It probably wont work, but its worth a try. Especially if they get many emails asking for the same thing.

Time will show if I get an answer.

See there I kinda like the idea of the whistle (assuming it's a good whistle) but I can't do the partial serrations, be they good or bad ones.

It is my observation that those (like folks on this forum) who are willing sharpen their blades and able to do so properly generally prefer PE blades, since (1) a sharp PE will outperform a sharp SE for most tasks, and (2) sharpening serrations is a PITA.  However, for those (a majority of users?) who can't, won't, or don't sharpen their blades, a SE makes some sense, since a dull SE will outperform a dull PE due to the fact that some ripping/tearing/shearing action is achieved by even dull serrations.
