Ah, since they have an English customer service they might have someone who speaks English. I know, it sounds obvious but with French people it isn't always.

Well I impulse ordered a yellow electrician.  Cheap enough to gamble on it was $36 shipped.

Should be nice either way.

Didnt have time to try it much as I'm just heading out, but I had to put up some teaser pics.

The only comments I have from 5 minutes of looking at it are,

- the bits seem like they will fall out of handle easy, only held in by friction.
- the bits are held well in the end by a magnet.
- the driver is very uncomfortable on palm when in screwdriver mode.
- I would have prefered a sheepsfoot blade, dont care for this shape.
- Blade notches seem fine
- The blade on the back side looks weird with the hump part in the middle.
-  I like the yellow handle!  Not a fan of wood so Id like this over wood on a standard opinel.

Ok after playing with this a bit more, the bits actually retain VERY well if you give them a good push.  But, the problem then becomes they are impossible to get out. I had to use my sak to free them.  What it needs is those little plastic grooves removed and a magnet embedded in the plastic under the bits on each side.

I do like this opinel though.  The action on this is much smoother than the other 2 I have that are wood handles.  I think the plastic is just smoother than wood on metal, but I like the feel of how it opens.

What I think I like the most of this opinel though is modding potential, it can take a standard opinel no9 blade.  So Id like to do that, then slot in some firesteel somewhere.  This to me has more pentental for an outdoor knife then the official outdoor knife.  Nice an light too and I really like the yellow color.  For outdoor knives I dont like natural materials like wood or leather as they swell when wet, so for me in this case the plastic is an upgrade from wood.

Oh actually this would work well with some beaded chain as a neckknife.  I like that idea as my typical neckknife combos are a blade and firesteel, so this could work very nicely.

I wish they would make a plastic handle version of their normal opies though. That would be great for outdoor and work use.
I have a No7 I used on a rainy day hike and the handle started swelling to the point that I needed pliers to open the blade when I got home :(

Looking good.

How thick is the spine of the blade?

The normal Opies don't have thick blades and while it makes them excellent slicers, I'd still like something with a bit thicker stock for hard work. I can understand them strengthening the blade at the notches but I'd have preferred it with just the bottom notch and more actual blade.

I would bet its just a normal no9 blade.  I only have an 8 and 10 to compare it to.  Its thicker than the 8 but not as thick as the 10.  It looks just like a re-profiled no9 blank to me, so thats my guess.

I wonder if the bits are going to go south on you once you have removed and replaced them a few times. Personally, I would like to see this 'type' done in plastic handle, gardener's blade, w/o serrations.

The new blade shape seems very strong indeed.

If I wasnt allowed to carry a locking knife and I had to use an Opinel, I sure would use a rubber band to keep it closed.  As these knifes age and dry out they become looser and looser.

Here are some nice users I just aquired

This might be abit off topic, but earlier in this thread I wrote that I had contacted Opinel Customer service and asked them nicely if they had plans for a outdoor knife with a PE blade. After some time I actually got an answer. (and sorry for waithing a couple of weeks before posting it)   :)
The answer is pasted in below. Not the answer I was hoping for, but I like the fact that they took my request seriously and took the time to write me a proper answer. :salute:

"Dear Gaute,
Thank you for your e-mail and your love for Opinel knives.
We do understand the problem. We developed the N°08 Outdoor knife in order to satisfy this kind of use. The serrations of the blade are made to cut ropes very easily even if the blade gets less sharp. For the moment we do not plan to launch the Outdoor knife with a plain edge blade but we take into consideration your remark and it feeds our product development cogitation...!

We hope you will still stay one of our fans.

Have a nice day,

Opinel team"

Do you have an item-number, perhaps? Have not found it on a local shopping site yet. And real stores always show me the outdoor when I talk about an Opinel with plastic grip or give me strange looks when i talk about a bit holder on an Opi... ::)

There is a number on the box and there is the barcode, but no Item #. They call it  "N°9 Bricolage"

I bought it for 19 euros and I considered it relatively expensive (for an Opinel).
Then I saw this: http://www.amazon.com/Opinel-Bricolage-Knife-No-9-Grey/dp/B00JSOW9FI

What am I missing here?

BTW, the English term I'm finding common used seems to be the "DIY Knife No9" or variations there-of: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Opinel-DIY-Folding-Knife-Tool/dp/B00JSOFVZ8/ref=sr_1_71?s=sports&ie=UTF8&qid=1405152329&sr=1-71&keywords=Opinel

I was surprised to see one of these in a brick & mortar Knife store in South Oz today, $50 was a bit much for me though. The store is owned by a mother & son, with the son also selling his custom made knives. It was nice to see a nice variety of quality knives for sale, becoming a bit of a rarity in Oz  :( :(
