How do you carry multi level lights?
on: June 02, 2008, 09:03:35 AM
Just wondering if you can keep your lights set to come on at a certain level, which one do you choose? Any lights I have that are multi level, I keep them set to come on high. I figure if I need low then I can set it as needed, but if I am going to really need a blast of real light, Im going to need it right away...self defense, fast check of a dark area...checking noises in the night and so on. Whats your preference?

I have them come on low, for night-blindness (as in not getting it with bright light),
and most of the times the low is enough so I can conserve battery life more.
If I need more I like to click or twist for it, which I would guess to be around
25% of the time.
judge others by how they treat those they are allowed to mistreat

I EDC a light that has no memory and always comes on on high. This is my preferred activation level, my first experience with multi-level were round-robin click interfaces. This UI was horrible for me and meant I always had to cycle through lo/med to get to high, which I use the most. Since then I am very judicious in my multi-level EDC lights. I either want no memory+high first or memory where I can set it to high first.

Most of my multi-level lights always come on in High (with no choice available) which is what I prefer for an outdoor light.

For strictly indoor lights, I actually prefer lights that come on in Low.  If a light always comes on Low, then I can use it late at night without disturbing others and without dazzling my eyes and losing dark-adapted vision or having trouble getting back to sleep.

For hand held lights, I don't really want anything more complex than two levels.  For headlamps, the more levels the better so far as I'm concerned.

And many of my favorite LED lights are still single-level: they still work fine, are quite reliable, and I still use them a lot.  (My Streamlight 4AA PP Luxes, for example - awesome 'bang for your buck' lights that will outperform plenty of more expensive lights.)

With a light that has only the choice of turning on in low or high mode, I always choose low.  That way I don't forget at night and ruin my night vision.

With a light that has multiple levels and remembers the last setting, such as the Novatac, I set it to come on at 30 lumens or so during the day, then set it to come on at a low level at night.  I like to only have about 1-5 lumens at night.
