Rival Tool Temptation's
on: June 02, 2008, 07:40:34 PM
Ok so we all have our own brand loyalties and tool's we swear by, but what tool's if any from a rival manufacturer catch your eye and why ???

I'm a complete Vic man as many of you know, but that doesn't preclude an interest in other tool's :)

From Lm I quite like the Blast :), I wantto like the Core, but it's just too big for pocket/belt carry in my opinion :-\, but they both have a nice, simple fuss free approach to a tool :)

I'm really quite fond of all the MP600's, but seeing as a tool HAS to have a saw, I'll restrict my 600 interest to those equipped with one :). I still really rate the Diesel and would like get another one at some point :)

SOG's are a bit of a toughy for me as apart from the Paratool, none of them float my boat, there just to big and un-ergonomic for me (sorry) :)

What about you guy's ???

As you all know I am a Swisstool guy, but from other manufacturers I like the Supertool from Leatherman, the Paratool from SOG and I am torn between the Flik (yes I did say the Flik!  :o) and the MP600 fisherman from Gerber.  I also really like the look of the CRKT Guppie.  :)
I'm back!!

Needle-nosed, diamond file and an almost perfect tool selection IMO.  The only thing that puts me off is the amount the pliers stick out then end.  As I pocket carry everything, that could be "interesting".  :D

I prefere early LM's too, they seem to have lost there appeal by just pursuing the OH route at all cost's, at least thats my opinion :-\

You guys are yakking up the big four pretty well. What about something less mainstream, like the Buck X-Tract or Wenger SwissGrip?

Love the look of the Swissgrip, but the X-tract does nothing for me.  One I did miss out was the Spyderwrench.  I really like the concept of that tool.

Yah the SpydeRench is a fun gadget to play with. (Kinda iffy on its practicality rating though) :-\  I see they have the new ones (not Chinese ByrdRench) for sale now, so maybe you can try one.

new ones are made in Taiwan,

I am a huge leatherman fan but i carry a swiss tool and  the craftsman professional (schrade) a lot. the super bear jaws and vise grip multitool are great work tools. when I go somewhere knowing I am bulding something and may need bigger (wider opening) pliers i grab the super bear jaws and a vise grip tool.

Buck X-Tract is my most carried and most used multi.  Carried whenever I'm outside working in the yard.

I love having a tool with a serious, one-hand-opening, locking knife blade - which is what I mostly need out in the yard.  Its screwdrivers are excellent, and I use its pliers to clip off the odd small branch on bushes.

Can't wait to get the new X-Tract Fin.

I am a Leatherman man :salute: but I like the look of the Swisstool X and some of the SOG MTs especially that they are interchangable but Gerber really does nothing for me I like some of there knifes but Don't know why just don't like MTs. Outside the big 4 I like my Sebertech M4 (IDL T10) not a fullsize tool but it is very handy sometimes :D I also would like to find a Cresent Toolzall I have always liked there brand of tools :)

Scratch that last coment about Gerbers I say all of J-sews in the collection post and there are a few of them I wouldn't mind calling my own  :D So in conclusion I like all the big brands and some of the smaller less known ;)  :D

I don't let any brand "rival" any other brand that I carry...I have a few of each brand and carry Leatherman, Victorinox, and SOG every day.

Every brand and tool has their own shortcomings, so I try to prop those up with another tool that compliments it.  During the course of a day I have ALL my bases covered tool wise, and then some!  I'm a maximumist :D
