In memory of his remarkable life Victorinox produced Carls favorite model, the Explorer, in a special edition with a damascus steel blade, inlaid Cross Shield, oak wood scales, and the laser cut signature of Carl Elsener. Legends abound around Damascus steel. Even today we do not know exactly how sword smiths from days of old produced such fine blades. Early descriptions discovered by historians and archeologists date back to as early as 300 BC in India. A blade made of this steel is characterized by distinctive patterns of banding and mottling reminiscent of flowing water. Such blades were reputed to be tough, flexible and capable of honing to a sharp, resilient edge. Today it represents a luxury item. The big blade of this knife is manufactured from the highest quality Stainless Damascus steel, with a 60 HRc hardness.
