Electrician blade

I have one here that I cut open and the opening is 2.5mm. This came from a 84mm knife? I thought these were all 2.2mm.

  Are you talking about the pivot hole? 

93mm and 91mm knives uses 2.5mm pins for the pivots of the main pins. The 84mm knives use 2.2mm pins.

This knife was worn bad. The Philips was rounded and the spring had a deep grove worn in it where it rubbed the Phillips. The Philips had no snap at all. That is when I found out the electrian blade had a 2.5 mm pivot point hole in it. This knife looked like it was never apart but I don't think Victorinox would make a knife this way. Both blades where very snappy. The Philips pretty much fell open and closed.

Well models like the SwissChamp XLT had a 2.5mm hole electricians blade.  Maybe the one you have is a mod using parts from something similar.

I measured this. I assumed it was a 2.5mm hole. It has a 3mm hole. I wonder where it came from?

A few different 93mm alox models have that blade.

Here's a list of all the knives that have the electricians blade. The pivot hole has to be a bit larger than the pin or it wouldn't be able to rotate around it but 0,5 mm seems a bit too much, what did you use to measure it?

I have a digital caliper that is used. I need metric drill bits. My 7/64th bit falls through with tons of play. It is a 3mm opening. I doesn't look drilled either as all the edges are very smooth and polished looking. I compared the blade to my XAVT and is is different. It looks the same length, but the curved part is deeper and the radius is smaller. Top is from 84mm or 2.2mm, next is 91mm or 2.5mm and the 3mm hole at bottom.

This is the part that gets me. How many times was the Phillips opened and closed to get this wear. Then I look at the electrician blade it shows little signs of wear. I think someone made this.

It is possible that it is a 3mm hole. Here's one I believe has a 3mm hole also.


This image came from eBay. I think all the electricians blades are 3mm? I have seen loads of knives with that kind of wear. Mostly due to the user not taking proper care of their knife, hence not using oil.

Clear up a couple points of confusion here:

- Outer pins on 84mm knives are 2.2mm
- Outer pins on 91mm knives are 2.5mm
- Outer pins on 93mm knives are 3.0mm

Electrician's blades come in two flavors that I know of - 1.7mm thick version with a 3.0mm hole, and a 1.5mm thick version with a 2.2mm hole.

There is, AFAIK, only one 84mm knife with an electrician's blade - the aptly named Electrician. All the ones I've ever seen (10 or so) use the 1.5/2.2 blade. I have taken one of these apart to use the blade in a 91mm mod and had to drill out the hole to 2.5mm.

There are, AFAIK, five different 91mm knives that have an Electrician's Blade (Master Electrician, XL, XLT, XAVT and XXLT). All of these use the 1.7mm blade. No clue if the pivot is 2.5mm or 3.0mm, but if I were a bettin' man, I'd put my money on 3.0mm. I've never disassembled one of these knives.

There are four 93mm models with Electrician's blades (and god-knows-how-many special runs). These all use the 1.7/3.0 blade.

It is not unheard of for Victorinox to use tools from one line on another. Not sure if this is done on purpose (Oh crap! Ran out of blades - steal some from the 93mm guys!) or they just get accidentally mixed in and in a production environment it's not noticed. For example, I have a Mechanic Jr knife that has a combo tool from the 111mm knife line - it's noticeably thicker. I've run across probably 10 or so Mechanic Jr knives since I started collecting, and all other nine had the normal 91mm combo tool. I checked and it's not a mod.

My guess is a 93mm 1.7/3.0 blade got mixed in to the 84mm line and put into your knife.

Cool not a mod then. My blade measures 1.598mm at the tang with a micrometer. The blade snapped great with the 3mm hole and a 2.2mm pivot. I felt no play, I guess because the spring kept it tight on the brass pin.

Late to the party, but I recently made a decent user out of a roughly 1950's Huntsman with the exposed rivets, 91mm size.
I was quite surprised to find that it had/has 2.2mm rivets throughout. Seemed to have nickel/silver liners.

Sounds like you Huntsman was from the 1940s then. Older style can opener I'm guessing? In 1951 Victorinox made a MAJOR change to the 91mm line that basically changed every tool in the knife. Pre-1951 are what are called "large frame" knives and they have 2.2mm pins on all four rivets. Post 1951 are the "small frame" 91mm knives with the modern 2.5mm outer pins and 2.2mm inner pins.

How thick are the blades? 1.5mm or 1.7mm?

1.5mm Here is another 3mm x 1.5mm. The the 2 XLTs I opened have the 3mm x 1.7mm blades.
