G-Shock Opinions
on: March 11, 2014, 02:44:03 AM
Hey guys, I got thinking after reading detron's thoughts on the new watch he got. I've been wearing my Nixon for about two years now, and while it is a very nice looking timepiece(in my book), it isn't exactly the most durable option out there.

Do you guys think the lower end G-Shocks are still high quality? Or is it a waste of my time and I would be better off waiting longer and saving up?

I don't know if the "Riseman" G-Shock is considered lower end (I think probably not), but it has been a completely awesome watch.  No complaints whatsoever over the last several years.  It just works.  I especially dig the atomic function so I always have the correct time, and I check the barometer daily to get a sense of what the weather is going to do.  I suspect that the entry level G-Shocks are built with the same quality.

Personally I'm saving up for the Rangeman now that it exists :)  I waited a long time on the off chance that g-shock came through with a triple sensor model.  Originally I wanted an all black Suunto Core, but the Rangeman has more features.

Thanks guys, personally I won't really use all the extra functions. I would just love to have a watch that I don't really have to stress over. Keep the Nixon for nicer days and the G-Shock for work/outdoors/everyday life.

In general you acan say, that teh G-Shocks are equally robust.
The basic ones have basic functionality, more expensive ones add functions like solar, atomic time signal reception or temp/altimeter sensors.
The "Master of G" series has watches with an added special ability (Mudman - mud resist construction, and a compass in it´s latest incarnation, Gulfman - sea water resistant Titanium case, Frogman - ISO certified diving watch etc)
Then there are other series like MT-G (Metal twisted G´s) with more metal, Aviators with shock resistant analog Movements and m,ore...

I´d say for starters, get a DW-5600E, the newest incarnation of the classic G-shock.
And stay away from teh G-Shock section of Watchuseek...

You can find a G for any taste - subdued and simple to Hyper colored big beasts and Multi Sensor Fieldwatches.

DW-5600E partially covered by M-65  :)

Variations in stealthed black...

ALL G's are top quality. You can't go wrong with a Casio. The classic DW5600 is available at approx. $45 USD. I have one and it's awesome.

Thank you guys, I'll be looking more heavily into it now. I like the look of the analog aviation collection a lot.

I have nothing to add beyond what Lowtech said.  The 5600E is a great simple watch with the classic Gshock styling and it can be had inexpensively.  There are some neat analog/digital ones and yes the aviation series is very nice but pricy.

Yep, great watches!  No matter if you get the most basic, or the top of the line, it'll take a lickin, and keep on tickin.
