Is there a way to add springloaded pliers to LMs?
on: March 07, 2014, 09:49:05 PM
I like the springloaded pliers on my sidekick and I don't want to use the more expensive LMs as a result.  Is there a way to add spring to a Surge plier head for example so I can upgrade and not feel like I'm missing something?

the Sidekick/Wingman pliers are unique in that the spring-loading mechanism resides within the plier head, rather than an external force like on the Squirt/Style lines. in addition, the plier heads are not compatible -- i.e., a Sidekick plier head will not fit in a Charge/Wave/Rebar, and a Rebar plier head will not fit in a Wingman/Sidekick.

modifying an existing plier head (like the Surge in your example) would be extremely difficult as the plier head does not come apart. I won't say it's impossible... but I'll be very surprised if anyone can come up with a way to add a spring to a Surge plier head without compromising the structural integrity.

I think it would be easier to do in something with a space between the jaws and the handles. It should be possible to put a spring in such as you get in cheap and nasty wire cutters like this:

I'm not sure it would turn out neat enough for my liking though.

Some of my cheaper multitools have normal push spring (like pens have) under plier pivot point. Is there any room to drill small notch on both sides, and put spring in there?

You could do as Crow stated which to me sounds like one of the easier ways, or use a leaf spring attached by a screw to the side of the handle. Only problem would be using the other tools.

I have been wondering about having a leaf spring on one of the handles which you can fold out to push on the other handle when you want springloaded pliers.

I put some thought into it the other day and I don't know if this would work for sure, but what about extending out the screw/ torx points on the surge  Then attaching an external spring piece to those, like how Cupboard posted in his picture.

Do you guys think that would be a good solution?

Metro printed a "whatever those are called" thingies with slots to hold T&T and attached to the outsides of a Wave or a Charge. You could probably make one of those with a recess to hold the spring and with a channel, in which a screw would slide allowing one to retract the spring.

That might interfere opening and closing. Will there be enough room for it? Or do you mean outside? It might get in the way when using, and you would need serious modding on those screws. There is no easy way there.

By any chance do you have a link for that thing you are talking about, I feel like if I could see it I would be better able to visualise what you mean.

The way I see it the spring has to be attached to the pliers rather than the handle because otherwise it would be sticking out sideways when you close the handles and catch on everything in your pocket.

Sorry if it took such a long time and for the crappy drawing. Also I just kept the layer colors.

The spring, in my mind, needs to be like the ones on Vic scissors. Could be attached to the bottom of the channel with screws or something else. The way to keep it closed (keep the spring from popping out) is to rotate the green tab sort of thing.

I hope it makes it easier to understand my idea.  ;)

On one of my small pliers, they have leaf spring on both handles. They are separate springs that attatches to each others via v-cuts just below pivot point. Just tension holds them together. You could make them like slide out when needed.
