Woow, how come ?! Neither of my two banks offer that at all. Maybe with time when we as a whole start using CCs more often, that'll happen, who knows. As i said, I was offered a card for free for the first year.. And then the fee is 40lv which is somewhere around $25, I guess.

I got my credit card when I got my mortgage on my house. They offered it and a savings account linked to my mortgage. So my wages go into my savings account which I can leave in there to gain interest or transfer my wages into my mortgage account lowering the principal therefore lowering my interest. When the credit card bill is due i can then transfer the money from my savings or mortgage account onto my credit card. Then start the whole process again.

I've heard of people knocking 10 years or more off their mortgage by doing something like this, depending on how much of your unspent money stays in your mortgage account will affect the term of your mortgage.

There's a fee for every transaction, which is paid by the retailer I think.  So instead of upfront fees to use the card, they're hidden in the purchase price.  Which is why some places (Aldi and Lidl supermarkets spring to mind, there must be others) will take debit cards but not credit.

lidl takes credit card here.

The Saturn shop in Austria only takes maestro or cash which is weird to such a big shop. This happens with some other electronics shops there too

If they won't take my cash, I won't do business with them even if 75% of my transactions are on my debit card. But all my range supplies, knives, movies, eatting out and the like are cash transactions.

As for how much I carry, minumally, $25 with at least a few ones. That's my walking about cash, and there is frequently more. I also carry quite a bit more than that in my wallet as emergency cash. Plus more in my EDC bag along with a roll of quarters. And a couple hundred in my vehicle, enough to get a tow truck. On the weekends in the summer, more walking around money. I love yard sales and flea markets.

Cash is King. Gold and silver is Queen. Jewlery is the Joker. But most of the time, you need a Knight or just a member of the gaurd- thats your plastic.

I'm thinking about another disadvantage of paying with a card and I've heard a lot of other people being annoyed by that. Very often it's sloooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooowwww. The terminal/device that reads the card would take a minute or two sometimes to read your card and issue a receipt. At least here. Of course there are those contactless cards, they're a lot faster, but they aren't really that common here in my city yet. So, sometimes it's faster for you to pay cash and get change back than using a card.... which is weird according to me. Since cards are meant to make your life easier.

There are obviously huge local differences. Using a card is faster than cash most of the time where I live. There is also experiments with using NFC in cell phones as a vector for payment of small sums.

I know I'm the odd one out here, but I think a cashless society is more of an advantage than a disadvantage. But, there are a lot of hidden assumptions when I say that, they hold here, they probably don't hold everywhere. Here, the bank always throws a debit card in your direction, it is usually free, everybody has a bank account (you can theoretically be utterly off-grid, but it requires you neither to be employed nor receive wellfare benefits, neither the government nor companies handle that as cash). So, I don't think going cashless has to exclude the poor. Privacy on the other hand, is a real problem. I'm personally disillusioned to a degree that I don't think it makes much difference going cashless.

My boss and I were talking about a cashless society the other day. Of course it has both pros and cons, Would we would loose our privacy? Yes! It could be like living in a sci-fi movie, working for credits, somebody controlling where and what you can use your credits for... Would it stop crime? Possibly! My boss brought up a good point IMO. Would it stop black market trading? For small time criminals, It probably would! Large scale criminals would just launder the credits. Imagine all the small time drug dealers trying to make a deal, or the road side prostitutes for example... What would they trade for, gold and silver?

This might sound odd, but laundry Detergent is a high-theft item. Untraceable, easily resell-able, relatively expensive product that is consumed (as opposed to a more-or-less permanent commodity).

To put it bluntly, there is NO WAY to stop crime. Invent a better method of stopping crime, and criminals will invent a new criminal activity.

Getting away from currency might cut down on some kinds of crime, though.

However, it's getting easier and easier for me to be paranoid about government pulling BS based on my purchase history. Hell, I hate to think how high up on watch lists my google searches put me. Setting all that aside, I find targeted advertising repugnant, and wouldn't put it past a single globo-corp to hack a database that tracked spending just to taylor their advertising at me. Oh... hey, look... my tinfoil hat! I'd wondered where I put that. :D

Yeah I have noticed a lot more targeted advertising lately, even here on MTo. I looked up some watches online last week, now I'm seeing watches advertised on almost every site I visit. It pissed me off to!

I know what you mean about trading every day commodities but I can't really see junkies carrying around a box of soap or rolls of toilet paper to trade for drugs or sex.

Lynn you are so very right about everyday items becoming forms of currency.  There will always be items to barter with and criminals to make a buck from them.  Similac (baby formula) is one high ticket item across the hoods of America, diapers as well.  Certain medications can be traded for more than the dollars they originally cost to those without health insurance.

Make something hard to get, there will be a blackmarket.

If we destroy paper money and pray that the database never glitches at the bank, odds are we're all eatting a yeast based kibble. Set up a nice underground market based on my ability to grow things like chives, oregano (takes some oregano, please! its taking over the garden), basil, parsely and the like in small containers. Tomatos, lettuce, carrots. Give me a gnarly, damp basement, and I'll grow mushrooms. I'll also turn meatlegger- small beef like hamsters and rats and gerbils are quiet, small, and with an underground garden, I can dispose of their waste. If people want meat, I'll barter with them- rations, clothes, electronics, jewelry, small children (doesn't have to be their own), I can trade that with people who want it.

Speaking about junkies and such not being able to use cash and not carrying a box of detergent around and trading gold & silver... what if the latter becomes true, actually? And what if to get that gold & silver, they start breaking into people's homes more often, for example or the rate of mugging increases? You see a woman wearing a gold ring, go beat her up, get the ring, get your fix.

Or, what if they just get their regular money they way they do, then they go pay for gold... cashless-ly, get the gold, hopefully, physical gold and pay for their fix. There's really no way to stop crime.. yeah.

I think I heard once on CNN that ISIS started using / proclaimed gold & silver as an official currency or something. Not sure how true it is.

This thread reminded me of a gloomy Sci-Fi story where money had been replaced with sex-appeal credit units.

Essentially, you had to be good looking and attractive if you wanted to get paid for your work that had nothing to do with sexual services.

I've always wondered why so many small shops don't accept cards here. Maybe it's because of the fees they have to pay the bank whose terminals/devices they use|?

There was statistics the other day that a lot over 50% of the BG people (don't remember the exact digit) use their debit cards only to withdraw cash from the ATM. Well, what the smurf else to use them for, since it's only the larger stores where you can pay with a card.

Like, I can only buy food in the larger stores and pay with a card. I can't buy my milk with a card (I buy it... from a farmer, so to speak, not in a carton i.e. real milk as I like to call it), I can't pay my bills with a card because most places you pay your bills don't accept cards either; I can't go buy fresh fruit&veg at the market with a card, because it's...well, a market, they don't take cards there either; I'm not sure what's the situation with the shops for clothes, as I don't shop there often, but still. Probably in the capital there's better paying system, but in my city (which is not small) definitely not

So, when I come to think of it, I only use cards where possible to avoid the ATM taxes... and also to be able to order cool things from eBay, lol.

Didn't someone just say something about praying the system never goes down?

Anything with a computer or machinery, it isn't a matter of "if" but "when" it fails. Catastrophically.

Strange indeed! I get it all the time, I mention something or notice something then I see it all the time. I reckon it's just cos it's in our subconscious we seem to notice it more, eg. I never noticed people carrying Leathermans till I started carrying one regularly.  ???
