A CLASSIC Space Tale
on: April 04, 2014, 08:45:15 AM

Full Article here (In German)
Thought you guys (and gals) might like that. Its a quite simple story actually.
- 15 year old Samuel Hess wrote Victorinox about his experiment
- Victorinox invited him for a presentation and after that agreed to sponsor the flight
- Yesterday the flight took place they started close to Zurich, the balloon rose to 30'000 meter (~98'000 feet) and landed in Bayern (about 200 km from where it started).
It wouldn't be the internet without people complaining.

Wow.
That was awesome. I know that little guy was cold with his tools exposed like that.

Sent from my fancy work phone.

I don't think he got any grade. The school project is only in planning and he intends to send a Raspberry Pi up and some sensors.

What is kinda nice is that he asked several companies and Victorinox was the only one that invited him to do a presentation and finally sponsored the endeavor.
It wouldn't be the internet without people complaining.

Is your Swiss Army Knife still usable if you drop it from 30 thousand meters?
You bet.

I wonder if they recovered it before someone noticed it.
If they didn't, I hope that whoever found the SAK first got to keep it. :P
By the way, at some point the classic probably hit the camera. Did you notice that the tools were in a different position after one of the cuts?

A great video & project!  :salute:

We should really make a "Classic Tales" video or so. I know someone who likes to arrange a Classic in silly poses

I think they did it because the Classic is their more recognisable model. Also it looks less threatening for a school project.

Well... no surprise there. But they did have a parachute. I wonder what would have happened if it freefell? I guess it would have still worked but you can't drop knives from the stratosphere on people's heads

I wonder if they recovered it before someone noticed it.

Well, they got the camera footage, didn't they? I reckon a stratospheric camera is more valuable than a red Vic Classic.

As long as it's been put in a well insulated box, almost everything should be able to reach those heights and come back without too many problems I think. My guess is that most recent smartphones would be unfazed :)

I meant, if someone was to steal it, they'd have stolen the camera before the sak, I reckon  :P
