Hi haulin,

Welcome aboard!

At one time Victorinox offered a wide range of 108mm knives in various blade combinations and handles. As for the German Army Knife (GAK), it was originally made by Victorinox, but later the German military contracted out the production to a half-dozen other firms.

Dunno about the warranty info, but as to the knife, there are two Victorinox GAKs.  The 108mm like you have, and the newer 111mm  OHO.  :tu:

Damn, beaten to the post twice!  I couldn't find my pics in Photobucket......

Is it bad that I knew whose this particular one was and maybe even when it was bought.

Yes, a lot, maybe even most members here in the Swiss forum have one one of those GAKs. And there are a few other companies that made them for the German army except Victorinox.

Here's the wiki page we have on it for more information:
http://www.sakwiki.com/tiki-index.php?page=GAK

I like the knife and form factor but hate the saw. ::)

It should be covered by warranty as all Victorinox knives are but I don't remember anyone here ever sending one for warranty. :salute:

I have 4 GAKs and none of them are Victorinox,  all made by some of the "other" manufacturers.

But I do have a 108mm Solo which is a Vic'  and another on the way.

I think they are a great "working knife".  Tough and not too pretty to "ride hard and put away wet".

It's a real one in case you were wondering. They went up in price though, they were selling for $15,90 originally so the stocks may be getting low.

I got 4 from them last week. I was suspicious how they said "genuine" so only ordered one first time. The solo is my most/given away knife so I need to stock up.

That is a great deal on the Solo.
I got my GAK from a surplus place and paid 3 bucks for it.
Wish I got another.

I know. I just ordered 3.

Regarding the Victorinox Warranty, they will pretty much fix or replace anything that their name is on.

One Adler GAK and one Victorinox Trooper here. Nice blade snap, nice chunky blade. Not crazy about the combo tool and the scales material is just atrocious.

Regarding the warranty I doubt they'll fix it, as it's discontinued. They might replace it with a Camper or Farmer or Trailmaster or something, I guess.

I have a DX Solo on the way too (been a few weeks already). I'm probably going to combine it with one of my GAKs to make a GAK plus.
Going to graft in scissors from a climber using the solo spring and keep the Vic' blade rather than the ICAR one.

Do you guys actually use the nailfile with the saw? I mean it sounds cool in theory but I managed to scratch my nails twice with the GAK's saw just by fiddling with it. I shudder to think what would happen it if I shook my fingers really fast over the nail, milimeters away from the sharp saw teeth...

Yes, I usually use the saw/file for filing nails. Great tool, IMO the best nail-file tool out there. Fast and efficient. I achieve the same results as with the Executive nailfile, but but significantly faster. But, of course, as with all other tools, it has to be used somehow properly, this one in particular with some touch, with gently strokes (robocop, terminator ... excluded  ) - the best way is "one way strokes" on the upper side of nails and at the same time from the outside to the inside part on the top of the nails (that would mean somehow from left or right to centre of nail, always one way stroke (not forward-backward). A few forward-backward filing strokes (and perhaps strokes beneath (under) the nail would be needed when nail get chipped hiting something, jammed or snag on something (dragging out some tool on some multitool perhaps  :D ). Take your time and get to know better one of the best tools, and of course keep an eye on your toes  >:D

... I guess you 2 are referring to different saw/file combo tools.
Using the nailfile on a GAK is much safer when you have the sawguard so you won´t rip into your finger when you slip with the file.
