Oh boy what a day
on: June 08, 2008, 07:42:47 PM
Today we had Helicopter training with the RAF search and rescue helicopter  :D B flight RAF Wattisham to be precise . I didnt get winched up but was on the boat and I was radio operator  :D

Heres some pics , I will upload some better ones taken from the shore but these were taken by me and the reason they are blured is because of the sea water being thrown up by the sea and the helicopter .

The SeaKing is one amazing helicopter. Never taken a trip, butt we drilled on loading and of-loading wounded when I was in the air force. God only knows how many people this helicopter have rescued.
There is no problem that cannot be solved by the use of high explosives.

How cool is that?

Are you with the RNLI Dunc? There was a time when it was an ambition of mine to volunteer for the RNLI - but I don't think there's many stations around Birmingham - lol.
I used to come here a lot.

Next time you have a training exercise with the RAF,I'll gladly volunteer to be a victim. That's times better than any training we ever did with any of the local med-flights.

No we are nothing to do with the RNLI and run totally independant from them .All fund raising is done by ourselves from public donations .We do excercise with them and have a good relationship with them along our coast .

When the lifeboat station was officially closed a year later, Captain Fanshawe of the R.N.L.I. spoke of its remarkable history. In seven decades, 781 lives had been saved, a record that could only be matched by three other British stations.

Wow - I (shamefully) didn't even know that there were any independent lifeboats left. Are there many others that you know of Dunc?

When I was younger, I did a lot of competitive sailing, but almost totally on inland waters. The only real sea sailing I did was arranged to get me (and a few others) through our RYA badges and was done on the Menai Straits.

I was however privileged to sail on the Broads a few times, on proper, old broads yachts (the kind the public can't get at ;) ). We used to spend at least one night at Great Yarmouth on each trip - is your station far from there?

I used to come here a lot.

Thanks for the interest Dave  :D There are lots of independant stations around Britain . Here in Norfolk next to us is Hemsby , then Caister and few miles to the North is Mundesley all have independent Lifeboats . We are all declared facility and answer direct to HM Coastgaurd ( MCA ) and will often work together along with RNLI crews on SAR . Btw we have RNLI lifegaurds on our beach in the Summer months , nice bunch of lads they are too and always very keen to train with us . Bloody good swimmers too .

Bloody good swimmers too .

Kind of a prerequisite for I lifeguard I guess :D

I just looked at where Sea Palling is on the map, and there's a lot of place names there that bring back fond memories. As well as my trips on the Broads (oo-err) I stayed with my uncle a few times. I can't remember where he was stationed (he was in the RAF), but I do remember a Corvette dealers nearby - was it Stalham or Stalham Green?

I'm glad I found this thread now :D Here's where we got the yacht's from : Hunter's Yard. I remember being told that one of the boats we had for a week was the "star" of Swallows and Amazons - lol. Shooting the bridge at Potter Heigham. All the shops in Wroxham seemed to be owned by the same bloke (was it Roy?).

:-[ Sorry mate - went all nostalgic there........

It wasnt RAF Coltishall was it ? My father was in the RAF and I was born there .

The Corvette dealers in Stalham was called Corvette Kingdom and I went to school with a guy who's dad was a part owner in it . They are now just down the road at Catfield .

I used to live in Wroxham and there is the Largest village store in the world there ( or so they say ) Fred Roy ( Now no longer with us ) started it up many years ago as a fruit and veg stall .

Small world isnt it ?   :D

Coltishall doesn't ring a bell, but it was a long time ago. Was it within walking distance of Stalham, as I maybe recall walking there with my uncle or parents - it's a bit foggy now. By coincidence I'm seeing that uncle this weekend for the first time in a few years so I'll ask him!

Corvette Kingdom - that's it. I was very young, but the image of all those corvettes round the back of the shop has stayed with me to this day. Must have been 20 or more - all lined up. Then again, maybe time has warped my memory a bit - lol!

Theres was RAF Neatishead ( Radar base ) but its a good walk , maybe 4 or 5 miles, then theres an old disused WW11 airfield at ludham that was a satalite base to Coltishall in the war . Would be great if you could ask your uncle .

Dunc! It was indeed RAF Coltishall I stayed at.

I only got to speak to my uncle briefly last night, but he did say that it's closed down now? He said they were turning it into an open prison and an "eco-village" (whatever one of this is).

So yes - small world indeed!

Wow  :D Yes its closed down  >:( It made me so angry  >:( The talk about turning it into a prison still continues but nothing sorted yet . They have sold off the houses though.
I miss the planes flying over head so much  :( It was one of my earliest memories and my mother said My first words were " airplane "  :D
