Teach me about PST's
on: May 28, 2014, 10:25:05 PM
I am considering giving a PST due to its relatively lightweight and simple package. I know that the newest ones are going to be over 10 + years old at this point. How are they compared to a Skeletool (which I currently have)?
I knew my wife was a keeper when she transitioned from calling it a knife thingy to a multi-tool.

The Skeletool is a bare bones tool and the PST and PST2 are pretty "complete" as compared.

The Pliers are probably equal in terms of capability IMO, as you can see the PST/PST2 have a pointier tip.

The blade on the Skeletool is a combo edge, the PST has a plain edge, and the PST2 has a combo edge. It is worth noting that the Skeletool blade locks and neither PST or PST2 does.

The Skeletool has a bit driver and on board storage for one bit.  I like the bit driver on this tool because unlike the Wave for example this one locks the bit in.
The PST/PST2 both have an assortment of drivers including 3 flat dirvers and one phillips.

The Skeletool can be carried using the pocket clip while the PST/PST2 are probably more likely to be carried using a sheath.  They are slim and light enough to be carried in pocket comfortably IMO.

The PST/PST2 both have files and both have can openers.  The PST2 has a scissors that is actually very nice. The PST has an awl and the carabiner on the Skeletool also doubles as a bottle opener.

You have a Skeletool and so you know what may be missing on the tool load out so with the PST/PST2 you do gain a few nice additions without extra weight.

PST/PST2 and a JPST thrown in just because.  I like the Skeletool in theory however for me the PST/PST2 are just a bit better in terms of a few extra nice additions for no extra weight.

Aloha pretty much laid it out for you :tu:  While I don't own a Skeletool, I have owned the Freestyle, and wasn't a big fan.  I know they're not exactly the same tool, but they are similar, with the Freestyle just lacking the carabiner/bit driver.  The PST offers much more than the Skeletool for a tool loadout.  The only plus for the Skeletool is the locking, OHO blade.  This of course is just my opinion, but the PST is the better overall multitool as far as I'm concerned :tu:

The drawback to the PST, it is an old design. Thus, the handles are not the most comfortable when applying a lot of pressure to the pliers as the handle frame edges dig in nicely into your palm. Other than that...if you are looking for a user, go with the PST II. Nice file and scissors. Hard to beat that even with the trade off of a serrated blade.

There's a theory here that Alox is the crack cocaine of SAKs. If that's true(and it is) then the PST is likely the crack of Leathermans,so BEWARE!

Having said that, the PST has numerous flaws...no locking tools and razor sharp edges to the handles being the biggest ones to my mind, but,it's a light, compact, versitile tool that defines the modern MT. And,yes, after a five or six year trip through the world of multitools,I've ended up back with a PST of some description as my EDC.

You NEED a PST,if only to see and appreciate the tools we have today!
There is no beginning,or ending, and for this we are thankful, cos now is hard enough to understand!

Back in 1997, I nearly bought PST, but ended up with a Gerber.

Now in 2014, I finally acquire a PST. It is NNIB, and I got it for a very good price. I don't think it will become a user, I am not a collector, but I am really glad I got it.

If you get the chance to get one, go for it.

I'm going to be honest here. I have had several PSTs, and currently still have a PST II. They're really nice, but I think for the slight added weight, I'd actually go with a Rebar. I feel it is a completely worthy successor to the line.

However, even saying that, I don't think you'll feel disappointed if you get a PST or PST II, unless locking blade is mandatory (which I've personally never felt it is).

Pretty much agreed on all points. I like my PST, but I would also choose the Rebar over it most of the time.

The Rebar is a great successor to the PST, great point Lynn :tu:.  Chako also makes a good point about the handle comfort.  I have been using my Japanese PST as my off day carry.  I don't have to many complaints being light to mid duty pliers.  I'm not squeezing to hard but admittedly I also polished the poo out of them.

I recently sent in one of my PST for broken pliers for repair, I was a little sad when I got back a new rebar and not the PST.  However, after carrying it everyday I must admit it is a great tool, it really does act like a improved PST.  Plus it just gave me an excuse to my another PST. You can find them (PST)online in great condition for less than $50, which is still cheaper than most leatherman tools. Happy Hunting.  :salute:

yes, they say on their website that it reminds people of the original pst. I haven't heard of anyone getting there pst replaced with anything but the rebar.

Seriously, and how often do you see a NIB one for such a low price. And they're just all sitting there, staring me in the face (in my watch list). Well now there are 7 left instead of 9  :multi:  I think I'll put one in my new (not the one for the car) EDC carry kit (Maxpedition Micro). :)
